I am looking for a 308 that
1. can put 3 in a pie plate at 300 yards from the bench
2. Weighs less than 10 lbs.
3. Can fire 10 rounds fairly rapidly (don't mind if I need to change mags, I just want to be able to fire 10 rounds rapidly)
4. Bolt, auto, (lever?) any is ok.
5. Package, including optics >$1500

Currently considering:
M1A Scout Squad
Mannlicher Scout (can't afford!)
BLR (can you change these magazines quickly? I know that means 9 total...)
Gunsight Scout (is it accurate enough?)
Mini-30 (???!)
Some formulation of an AR platform? (don't know squat about them...)

Armalite Model: A10A4CBF *Item Condition: Factory New *Bud's Item Number: 80434

Or Savage 10FCM Scout

I like the Springfield Scout but it's over your proclaimed budget.

Both of these are .308/7.62

cant beat the M1A, but I just bought a new standard loaded for $1450, add optics to that and you will be way over 2 grand. you will need the right mount plus cheek piece, so it adds up, Buds will sell you one, no taxes, no shipping, only your cost of FFL. Armalite about $1250.

I have owned an FNH SCAR 17 for the past 3 months and put over 500 rounds through it. Highly accurate (with match ammo MOA), exceptionally soft recoil and very light (much more so than an AR10). Only two complaints; it is very expensive and magazines (I secured an extra at purchase making 2 total) seem impossible to find.

I'm liking my M1A squad scout so far. Had some major problems with the LER scope flying off zero due to heat, but I'm pretty sure that was a malfunction with the rings. I don't think others have had the issue. But overall it really seems to be at its best with iron sights. Folks scope them certainly but if you're looking for a high mag scope the flattop AR-10 is probably a better bet.

Those weird new Browning FNAR's are apparently excellent, but I've never shot one.

The SCAR 17 is at least $1000 over the OP's budget, phrogpilot.

Any of those guns should be able to put three shots in a pie plate at 300 yards. Of those...I would get the Ruger Gunsite Scout. Leaves you money for a scope (I would mount one using traditional rings it comes with, not the scout mount)

It may be that the answer to my question is that it cant be done for $1500 (I haven't followed your ideas yet, not at home...). Thanks: I'm glad your 1st answer is the
M1A, I like the SSquad: the prob is the cost...

Savage 99 kinda fits all the bills, cept the 10 rounds quickly. But it fires fast, fires quick, accurate, fits the budget, and its a lever action .308

This may be a little off the wall, but you could take a Tikka T3 Lite, chop the barrel down to 16.5" and grab a couple of 5 round magazines. Throw a 2-10x35 on top and you'd have a loaded rifle under 7lbs.

I have the Scout Squad and it will do what you want but you will look for a while to stay in budget.
The Scout scopes from Leupold or Burris will be more than adequate for the task and won't break the bank.
For around $500 you could pick up a used 760 Rem pump and get the after market 10 rd mags or stay with the super reliable 3 shot factory ones. I think there was even a LE 760 in 308 that had some extra options over the stock mod.

It can easily be done. Here are some options that are easily under your budget:
1. Saiga 308: Probably the least expensive of all the options before you. Accurate enough, AK reliability, 20 round magazines available, easy to mount a scope via the side accessory rail, lots of aftermarket parts. Only problem is you should convert it to a pistol grip (extremely easy to do).
2. Savage Bolt Action: A base model could even be less than the Saiga. Low mag capacity, but very accurate.
3. Ruger Gunsite Scout: Probably about $800. Hard to find. Probably the best bolt action for your price range and desired use right now. 10 round magazines, fast bolt, open sights, provisions to mount a forward scope or a rear one
4. AR-10: Probably just below your price range. Won't leave a whole lot of money for optics. Pretty heavy, depending on model. Good thing about this is you can add accessories as you go. However for what you stated, I would feel better about the Saiga.
5. Vepr 308: Basically a nicer Saiga. Accuracy *MIGHT* be better. Scope mounting is the same. Heavier rifle, harder to convert. I'd choose the saiga over it. Doesn't leave much for optics.

Of all the choices out there, I'd go with the Saiga 308. Not too heavy, several barrel lengths available, it'll chug with cheap steel cased ammo, high cap mags available, easy to mount a scope (and leaves you lots of money to do so), lots of accessories available, very customizable, and plenty accurate for what you want as well as quick and easy to point.

EDIT: I realize I recommended the Gunsite scout earlier. Thats probably the best bolt option, whereas I'd say the Saiga is the best semi option for you.

Here's your answer... Like me, you've found that you want .308...

since you don't mind swapping mags, etc. (you have time) I'd say your best cost effectiveness would be to go with a decent bolt action first. Ok, that's just my conclusion... auto-wise, I'm looking at the FNAR as well. Only diff is the AR is much more modular, and prob worth the wait

You posted right before I did re: the Gunsight Scout. That has been an option from the beginning.

I'll be honest though: I love my Ruger wheel guns; I'd be willing to argue that they are among the best of the best. But I have not been overly impressed by my Mini14 and my 10-22 has not been my fav gun either.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong: but my main question re: the Gunsight Scout is, can it shoot better than me (not all that hard to do ;) )? And will it reliably shoot the mag out w/o a FTF/FTE? I don't need (and can't buy in CA) anything more than a 10 rnd mag (so I'll buy 2 or 3 :) ).

I am looking into some of the other suggestions you all gave: thanks for the input and I'd love some more.

That's easy! FNH FNAR. The only thing is the rifle itself runs $1400-1500 so you may spend a little more than you originally wanted if you go with it but i absolutely LOVE mine.

Savage Scout comes with detachable magazines .
I also has the accutriger and accustock an will fit you budget.

Art: I am very glad to hear that about the Gunsite Scout. I love my wheel guns by Ruger. Until I can come up with the money for the M1A, that will have to do.

Thanks for picking up on my typo taliv; I think it is funny that everybody knew what I was going after! LOL!
