Acog Help Please!

alright i need to fill the void in my collection for a dmr, to marry up with my m4. so i am gonna go with a .223/5.56 20" barreled ar,which one i don't know yet still working on that to! dpms panther bull 20, bushmaster target
20" etc. and i can't figure out what is what when it comes to the acog's there are just so many choices i can't decide! any help would be much appreciated! thanks.
 
TA01 NSN, It goes directly onto your flat top and if you use a carry handle, it has a slot so you can use your irons. not to mention the little ghost ring sights on the scope itself. Budget looks around $1000 less you can find one used

my buddies are issued these and they like them. Good enough for a marine, should be plenty for regular use.
 
if you want you bdc to go from 100 to 800 yds get the original 4*32,the reticle is a little cluttered though.780.00 arizona gunrunners.if your eyeing a BAC model avoid the donut reticle, it is so bright it can obscure small targets.good choice on scopes!you can't go wrong with trinjicon.
 
It mostly depends on what you are looking for... the TA31DOC is probably the best all around ACOG in my opinion. It combines a fiber-optic illuminated TA01 reticle with a Dokter Optic red dot mounted on top for fast shooting. The TA11 is another great general purpose scope that is a little cheaper and less busy.

I have a TA11 donut reticle myself, and I love it; but the TA01 lets you wring a little more precision out of the 4x scope. The main problem I can see with using an ACOG as a DMR-type optic on a match barrel is that you will have a rifle capable of some extraordinary accuracy; but the 4x optics will limit you. I have the same problem with my favorite rifle.

It has a beautiful, top-grade match barrel on it that is capable of tremendous accuracy (especially with the Hornady 75gr OTM); but you really have to work to get that max level accuracy with a 3.5x scope and a donut reticle.

The reason I still have the ACOG despite that is because when you need fast practical accuracy across a wide range of conditions, the TA11 is tough to beat. It is only when you want to shoot tiny sub-MOA groups that it starts to be lacking; but then it isn't really designed for that purpose.

I would also disagree with sinstr's comments about the donut reticle. Almost all the BAC reticles can be too bright. The easiest solution for that is to cut a piece of inner tube and use it to control the amount of light entering the fiber optic. Zak Smith has some good photos of this set-up.
 
If the fiber optic pipe is covered completely, the donut reverts to plain black (in dark, the tritium illumination is still visible). This can be accomplished by covering it with masking tape. I have gone to using a cut bike innertube over the ACOG. Normally, it covers all but the last 1/2" of the pipe. Even with this amount covered, the donut is as bright as it gets. The last 1/2" or even 1/4" of the length (down to totally covered) is really what adjusts the brightness in a dramatic way.

Thanks guys ya'll have pointed me in the right direction, and it is much appreciated! see the only experience i had with acog's were the one that i had on my rifle in the desert, it was a TA31F and since then i have always wated one for my personal ar-15! thanks again for all the help and advice!
