I'm considering a magnified optic for a 16" 5.56mm NATO rifle. This weapon serves as my general purpose rifle.

I used to own a TA33 with amber chevron reticle and really felt it was a great scope for a general purpose rifle.

If I buy another TA33, I'll go with the green horseshoe reticle.

However, I've been looking at the low magnification variable scopes on the market from Nightforce, Leupold, etc. Specifically, the Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm MR/T with Illuminated CM-R reticle and Nightforce 1-4x24mm NXS with FC-2 reticle.

Do you think these low magnification variable scopes offer advantages over a TA33?

I'm especially interested in speed of target acquisition, clarity, weight, and size.

do NOT buy the NF 1-4. it flat out sucks. horrible scope.
i'm not a fan of the leupold mark 4 either.

there are some good 1-4x scopes on the market. and some better 1-6x, 1-8x and 1-10x. you will find swaro z6 1-6x is very popular for speed with the 3gun crowd.

i love my acog, but could never run it as fast as either the 1-6x or a red dot inside 50 yrds.

the NF 1-4 glass is horrible. extreme distortion/fish eye. it's nothing like the glass in their bigger scopes.

i didn't say the leupold sucks... i just don't like it and think there are better options for the money/size/weight. the styling is goofy. i can't imagine why one would want all those rails on a 1-4x optic. i don't think its as fast as the others because the picture you get is a lot smaller

Good question. This is something that I've pondered for a while myself, especially considering the price of an acog. I don't have an answer for you, but I do think there is something to be said for the durability of the acog vs adjustable scopes.
The acog is a work horse.

That sucks to hear about the poor glass quality of the Nightforce. For the price they're asking, that's very disappointing.

taliv, I think you've mistaken me asking about the CQ/T. I'm asking about the 1.5-5x20mm MR/T.

No rails. It looks like a normal scope :)

you're right. my bad. i haven't used the scope in that pic and have no opinion on it. i was thinking of their other one.

btw, the knobs on that actually look useful

I'm also looking at the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x and Leupold Mark 6 1-6x20mm.

The Leupold Mark 8 is interesting, but it's breathtakingly expensive!

From what I've read, battery power from every Leupold scope sucks.

The Accupoints are interesting. Especially with the green triangle reticle.

I'm going to get the SWFA 1-6x24HD when it comes out. Was planning to get their 1-4 but then I heard about this scope.

Japanese made, covered or exposed turrets, reticle that looks useful at both 1x and 6x, and daylight visible illumination.

If enough people like SWFA on Facebook the price goes down $200 for 30 days:

I already have their SS 5-20x50 and it is a great scope for the money.

nikon m223 makes a nice bdc scope for the ar, reasonably priced.other than the acog, which i think is hugely over priced,i can see why everybody is spending huge amounts for these lil scopes with the 20mm objective.no field of view, less low light gathering ability.if your trying to pick out a target way out there with the 20mm,you will miss anything that's off to the sides.
