LOS ANGELES, May 11 (Reuters) - Dennis Farina, a former policeman who built a Hollywood career playing detectives, was arrested on Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport for carrying a loaded gun on his way to board a plane, police said.
Farina, 64, told police he brought the .22 caliber, semi-automatic pistol with him on a drive from Arizona to Los Angeles and forgot it was in his briefcase when he tried to pass through airport security, police said in a statement.
He was scheduled to take a United Airlines flight to his home in Chicago.
"Farina was very apologetic and cooperative with officers," police said. "However, he had no apparent authority to carry a concealed weapon at the time of his arrest."
The actor was initially booked on one misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded firearm and bail was set at $25,000. The charge was upgraded later to a felony after police confirmed the gun was not registered, and bail was raised to $35,000.

Excuse my ignorance but do handguns have to be registered in the People's Republik of California?

Yes all handguns have to be registered here, unless they were owned here prior to 1992(?). Long guns do not need to be registered.

Durn!

I lived there 8.5 years from 1995 to 2003 and never registered my firearms. Never knew I was supposed to.

Glad I made it back to Texas!

Mr. Farina will probably skate on the charges eventually. He can afford a good attorney.

This a link to a synopsis of California gun laws.

There is no requirement to register a already owned handgun unless you're bringing it in to the state or if you sell it to someone else; then it will be registered by the dealer (FFL) that does the private party transfer.

If you're a resident and legally bought a handgun from a private party back before they required the FFL transfer stuff, you do not need to register it, unless you want to carry it concealed. Then it would be on your CCW. Of course, fat chance of getting one of those if you live in L.A.

Oh, I used to live in the PRC, so I'm somewhat familiar with their gun laws.

Does anyone know where Farina lives? If he was a resident of AZ (where he claims to have driven from), does the gun need to be registered in AZ?

Hope he gets out of this. He is one of my favorite actors. He was great in the movie "Snatch"...

Of course if he had checked his firearm with TSA, it probably would not have been a problem.

If you had bought a handgun during that time period, the CA FFL registered it for you.

Starting in 1991, all handgun transactions are automatically registered with CA DOJ by the CA FFL dealer.

so he resides in chicago? buys a gun in AZ. and declares it to TSA and brings it back to IL. hmmmmm... how would that be OK with the whole no guns thing in chicago?

eric, he may live in the suburbs or Indiana and buy his guns there. Daley buys his guns in Michigan, Oprah buys her guns in Indiana where she had the house on the beach.

Many people say that they live in "Chicago" but really live in Buffalo Grove, Illinois or Saint John, Indiana.

Another case of laws being enforced against people who pose no threat. No free man should ever be subjected to laws limiting them the ability to self defense. Assuming he is found guilty, what good has come of this arrest? Are the streets of America more secure, safer, with his arrest?

I like the mans acting, he's a natural who portrays what all of us like in an officer, sage wisdom, common sense, courage under fire and devotion to duty.

Wow, a felony???

The land of the free..

Yup.. Handguns are "registered" in CA.

1st offense Concealed carry without a ccw license is a misdemeanor, but if the pistol isnt registered to you, then it's a felony. Being that he's a resident of another state, I dont think there's anyway it could have been registered to him anyway.

Even if a person bought a handgun before they started registering them in CA, it still might be a good idea to voluntarily register it just in case the person one day pulls some bonehead move and a loaded magazine ends up in the mag well.. IIRC, it's $19 to voluntarily register the gun and could be the difference between a misdemeanor and felony one day.

Agree with xring.

Doesn't seem like there was a "problem" at all, except what the state makes of it.

Hmm.... Interesting. So California has a looser punishments on gun crime than most places, but has more restrictions on legal gun ownership than most places. Imagine that. In Ohio, carrying a concealed firearm without license is a felony, so you don't get the chance to do it again.

The difference between Mr. Farina and a regular Joe is that Farina will eventually get a pass, while the regular Joe goes to the crossbar hotel.
