Actual Bullet Ballistic Coefficents

0.1 mil at 500 between the ballistic calculator and my shot group. I'm probably the biggest variable.
No doubt, and the factory BC given by Berger is plenty good enough for 500, even 600 yards, but once you get out there, not so much, it needs tweaking.

IMHO, the delta in conditions probably plays a larger roll, both atmospheric exterior, and the effects of temp on MV than having the errors in your BC.
Depends on how far out you go.

Growing up, we just used a piece of butcher paper stretched across a wood frame. Put a spot to aim at about a foot from the top, and start backing up, shooting groups. We just needed to know the drop out to 300yds. Pop wasn't gonna let me shoot at anything that far anyway, but I at least knew.

Running things out to 500 - 1000yds and having electronics to work with made things easier, but I still did the same type drop test to verify the results.

Shot at stuff and figured out where on the vertical part of the crosshairs to hold. The old Leupold "Duplex" reticle had more than one spot you could use repeatably.

The X of course, but also the top of the thicker post, the middle
between there and the X (Easy to eyeball), etc, etc.

I shot my first NRL22 match doing that. Using Strelok, the crosshair, and duplex features I managed a 2nd place finish just using Strelok to visualize the hold for each target size and range for each stage. Took a lot of pre-work to setup each stage in Strelok before the match but it work well. No dialing the scope just memorizing the hold for each target just before the stage.

Well YEP, that's using what we had to work with. As one of my coworkers used to say, they got us building precision equipment with sticks and spoons.

And as for that reticle, I had a Leupold 4-14 on my 25-06. With it, I used that as a range finder, to quick check an antler spread, and to demise quite a few long range coyotes. On top power it was 18" at 400yds from center to the bottom where it widened. I love that scope.

Hornady App calculated 2.3 mil @ 500 yds. Shot group (first round hit manually adjusted to compare apples to apples) will work for my purposes.

Hornady App calculated 1.26 @ 400 yds. Wind was picking up and gusty so Hornady App estimated from 1.1 to 1.3 mil @ 400 yds depending on wind.

I’m leaving the B.C. alone for now.

It was 19 deg and the wind was picking up so I didn’t have time to set up the ProChrono and shoot as much as I would have liked. Also was with a friend trying to get his rifle sighted in. He had a gunsmith work on his gun and his scope had not been bore sighted. I kept telling him to dial more to center and he kept only going half way. On the plus side of him taking so many shots, I have 17 cases of once fired 7mm RM brass from him - for free!
