My computer was compromised and it will be some time before it's fixed. What ever got into my 'puter tries to call 900 numbers when the modem is pluged in and deletes files when I unplug it.

This is a gun related post because I'd like to shoot the mangy scoundrel what kilt my computer.

It may only be a week or two, but Ill be back.

take it easy pal!

let us know if you can what happened i.e how you got bug and de bugged...
go to the pulic library to stave off withdrawal symptoms ....

You got to wonder what kind of person creates a malicious virus. I do believe that the punishment for such crimes should be severe. There is a new worm out there now that destroys your MS office files that has infected around a couple of million computers. DO NOT OPEN ANY UNKNOWN ATTACHMENTS!!!

Sorry to hear that, hence why I love my Powerbook running OS X. :)

For windows users, make sure to run some sort of spyware app (spybot, spyware doctor, etc.) and an anti-virus program...Beyond that..When I used windows up until about a year ago, I never ran anti-virus or spyware and never had an issue...I simply never clicked on banner adds, or visited "funny" websites, or opened attachments when I wasn't expecting them.

Good luck.

I feel your pain.

OTOH, its nice to have a laptop handy for occasions like that. Getting online help with a laptop to work on your home PC is very convenient.

Regseeker - registry sweep program. It's Freeware. Very effective but you need to know a little about the files that make your computer run. If you are not careful, you can edit yourself into oblivion. I use this to clean up the registry and delete programs that windows "uninstall" doesn't let me delete. Plus you can see and delete the files that actually exist in your start-up file.

Also
I've found spysweeper VERY effective in blocking/stopping hacker attacks. Not a free program but this one is worth every penny.

Gun related. hmmm. I consider these to be the 10mm of the anti-virus programming world. :)
