Me again. Thinking a O/U might be better as my first shotgun instead of a single shot. I don't have to use both barrels, but I have the option.

Still only considering a break open action and don't want to spend to much. Don't know the use yet, a bit of everything I guess. Will try clays and maybe hiking with it and a bit of hunting. Still looking at 20 gauges.

So what are your thoughts between the CZ Mallard v. Rem Spartan, both O/U. CZ is 100 more, but that does not really matter much. Only live once.

Thanks.

Choices

Glad you're sticking to reliable break-action shotguns.Either of your 2 options would be good.I own 2 Spartans-SXS's in 28+.410.Well made+durable.Simplicity itself and since yopu mentioned hiking, you won't freak when it gets a few dings!Have you considered SxSs.Bbls in a horizontal plane ride better with a sling ,which you'll need for hiking.Either way 2 bbls is essential if for no other reason-versatility!If you start shooting clays-I assume you mean trap-you'll graduate to skeet which req.2 bbls or an auto or a fast shuckin' pump.Believe me,if you are hiking thru a nice field and jump a covey of quail, you'l blast one and naturally swing on another and........nothing.No double. So get a double and go get a double!Further-20ga is good choice for 1st gun. They're sweet to shoot.

I can't get my face down properly on the Mallard; it just doesn't fit me.

You might wanna try shouldering each of them before you pick one.

Thanks. I am going to shop around this weekend and see what fits me best.

I suggest taking a look at the Stoeger Condor O/U. Reasonably priced and reliable and made in Brazil. Distributed through Beretta/Benelli dealers, it's an under rated firearm. I totally love my 410 Condor. Try one on for size.

The Condor is a bit rough, but it is about the only sub-$1000-new O/U I'd consider buying. I've known a few people with them, and they have had no trouble. YMMV of course.

The Condors I've seen all loosened up pretty fast, but they stayed locked up OK and kept on shooting.
