Looking for some advice from those high roaders who actually have some real insight, not some videogame experience....

My parents live most of the year in the country on a small ranch about 7 acres shaped like a long skinny rectangle and much of the summer months an hour away in the mountains. On the property is their house at the north end and a mobile home in the middle of the property which is a rental. Several months back, they evicted the renters and in the process found that they had stolen some goods from my dads shop and also we found they were meth users.

Back to present time, the female meth head has been back at least three times in the last month saying she wanted to "pay back for a broken window" or asking the new tenants where my parents are. Today, my dad was home and saw a car **back up** into our driveway and it was the meth head former renter. She knocked and the dog barked from inside, but my dad did not answer. They have several vehicles so even tho my dad's truck was there it may not have been apparent that he was there. My dad is watching discretely and she hangs around the corner of the house out of sight for 15 minutes. Then she leaves to the mailbox out by the canal and goes through our mail and then leaves a note, that later was found to be addressed to both of my 20-somethings old brothers asking to call her.

We have contacted the sheriff before and asked them to patrol our area when we were gone, but that will only get us so far. The meth head woman had a boyfriend who made a living stealing atv's and selling meth and is very sneaky.

We are staying around the house more now, but only my mom and one brother live there consistently. (Mom is a teacher, brother is on 24hr shifts, dad is retired but goes to the mountains until it cools down more) We are thinking about going to get a video surveillance system installed, but I am guessing there are some of you with a better idea then just the vid system. Any other advice would be helpful. Thanks.

- Video system w/recording device
- locked gate across the road/drive
- motion lights

And maybe just as effective....a conversation with said meth head. Nothing preachy or argumentative, just something like...

"Hey, I don't want see you around here. I know your history of theft and if something comes up missing, I'll know it was you. Nothing I've got is worth somebody getting hurt over. "

yep. WNC Seabee covered it well. I'd also call the sheriff every time I saw them. Tell them (her) to stay away, and then after that - she's trespassing.

They're not afraid of the dog? A lot of these types of threads end up recommending a canine solution.

Tell her once never to return to your property again. Note the date and time. If she returns take out a warrant for 2nd degree trespass. All the other suggestions are good (other than the threat). Just call her and tell her.

out by the canal
If it is on your property I'd put up a gate. A good sturdy one that would be a real bear to bypass. If she left her number I'd call her and ask what she wants and why she is hanging around. If she really does want to pay for a broken window I'd meet her in town in a public place for the exchange and make it very clear she is not welcome on your property. Alerting the LEOs is not a bad idea but they can't be around all the time. Cameras at the gate and the buildings is not a bad idea either.

I've never known a meth addict to willingly go to the cops to report a threat. In this case, I'd be comfortable with a thinly veiled comment. Nothing over the top or explicit, just a firm way of saying, "I've got my eye on you and I'm not intimidated."

This is just the kind of crap that would scare me to near death if these were my own parents.
These worthless souless ghouls know zero good or intent and should be looked upon as poisonous vipers.
They are obviously thinking remote target with older folks.
Sharpen every defense now and become very proactive with them.

The one thing I would like to reinforce, from my experience with addicts, users and other assorted disfunctionals on the fringes is that they seem to live in a bit of a fantasy that they are getting by with incredibly shallow "covers". Prolonging contact with them increases your risk of being involved directly in their disfunction. Don't encourage this (their idea that their cover is working) if you are interested in prevention, make it perfectly clear (within the law) that they are not welcome, you are watching or vigilant for them and you vigorously defend. Don't under any circumstances present a "soft target" if you can afford gate and cameras, so be it. The nature of the property, circumstances and rental right downtown almost dictate this. IMHO though the biggest factor is heavy screening of potential renters and an almost aggressive attitude toward what must be considered a screening failure. Use effective analysis to understand how to avoid being here again.

I do not believe that excessive animosity is warranted until they show the persistance you describe. Generating unnecessary bad blood with anyone is never a good idea, however you have put enough puzzle pieces together at this point to abandon any percieved social requirement to be polite. Get determined and get rid of them. Make it a family project, exert the effort. An ounce of prevention and all that.

Get a security system that includes cameras and dvr. Make sure it uses IP relay to send recorded data to an online server because regular cameras and a dvr are worthless if they come in and steal the dvr.

Been There Done that

Try discreetly camouflaged IR Game Cameras. They provide photographic evidence for a conviction, but will probably not get your possessions back. They will however get the culprits out of circulation. The convictions will also get you the reputation as someone not to mess with.

Swann makes a good system, and throws in phone support when you need to set it up.

I have a 4 camera, 500 gb system, with the ability to connect to the net for remote viewing.

480 lines of resolution on the picture helps keep faces defined , and you can set up "alert zones" in the camera's field of view with varying success.

Good luck, huge problems with metal theft with tweekers here, some scrap metal controls have helped a bit, but you never know when the fiber optic line across the Columbia river will be cut because some idiot is trying to scrounge copper.

So she has been seen around the property and the only activity witnessed is her in the mailbox and leaving a note ?

mail and then leaves a note, that later was found to be addressed to both of my 20-somethings old brothers asking to call her.

Perhaps your brothers can shead some light on why she is coming back and wants to talk to them. What relationship is there between her and them ?

My brothers were consistently home when she was evicted. they have since both been hired (the one at home, very recently) as firemen and one has moved into town just recently.

Thanks

To everyone else, much thanks for the responses. I have a friend whose brother, i just found out, is a Sargent a the county sheriff here and we are getting some extra checkups from any officers in the area. We were able to get a hold of the meth head on the phone and explicitly state that her business is done here and that she had no reason to be around our property. She was then told that we had seen her looking through our mailbox and not her old mailbox next to it. She had excuses and more stories that did not make sense. Both she and my dad remained civil and no aggression was used. There was plan to purchase an automatic gate, and that has been bumped up. They are also upgrading their home security system to a cellular based program and (yes the mailbox video claim was a bluff of sorts since my dad saw it, and there really is a camera, but not a recording capable one) there will be a dvr based camera system that will be with all the bells and whistles mentioned by some of the highroaders here. To top it all off, this has put my previously gun-fearing mom over the top and she now wants to sign up for a women's firearm training at our local indoor range! I think I will sign her up here at THR! :D Thanks again everyone!
