Advice needed for AR15 trade.

Hey guys I have been interested in getting an AR15 for quite some time and with the current status of legislation, people freaking out, and prices going up and up, I am considering trading one of my guns for an ar15 since I dont have the cash laying around to buy/build. I am an AR newby and have a potential trade lined up and was hoping I could get some insight from people who know a little more about AR's than I. I live in Ca and this is a legal gun with a BB.

What I will be giving up:

Kimber Eclipse Target II 1911. I am 2nd owner, round count about 900, excellent shape, no problems. Have 4 mags, original box and paperwork. Brand new MSRP 1400 I got it for 900 a few years back.

What I would be receiving:

AR15 It is a sun devil lower multi cal stamped. With a DPMS 16" heavy barrel free float with a integrated Vang comp. The lower has about 200rds fired and the upper has about 40 rds down the pipe. 1X9 twist. Target crowned chrome moly w/ Levang comp. Simmons Aetec 2.8-10X44. with illuminated reticle scope. Says its accurate and dependable.

Only thing I really see myself changing about the gun is trying to add some BUIS. I just wanted to know what you guys think about this trade... Would you do it? (Especially considering how hard it is right now to find AR15 parts? Plus, I am going to be ANGRY if these things end up getting banned or nerfed even harder)

Personally, I'd keep the kimber. I wouldn't trade a class act 1911 for a cheap brand mutt AR. But then, I already have 5 ARs.

That's a beautiful 1911. If it just doesn't float your boat and you're really pining for an AR, I guess it would be a fair trade.

Question is...and I know nothing about that particular AR...is it decent quality and put together properly? Why is he selling? I'd be skeptical with such a low round count.

Also would you have a place to actually fire it and how available is 223 ammo in CA. Honestly with CA AR feature restrictions, it's pretty pointless as it really isn't a true AR at this point, just a heavy barrel target shooter with 10rd fixed mag limit. If you want to punch holes in paper at 200 yards there are better platforms for doing so.

I would wait until the AR craze is dead, then trade for a top quality rifle. Pre craze that would be about a $600 AR, used.

The AR while not really crap is definitely one of the lower tier ARs out there. And I hate to say it, but being a parts build as opposed to a factory rifle hurts resale value as well. A factory new DPMS would usually go for around $800 before this panic started (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Also, you won't be able to put a front backup iron sight on there without changing the hand guard to a railed version (and a good one is pricey). You may be able to swap the gas block with a standard AR front sight, but that'll mean you have to go with a new (shorter) hand guard anyway.

To be perfectly honest, I've never been a 1911 guy but I still wouldn't do the trade. Maybe if you were looking at it as a start to a build where you would sell off some parts to pay for new ones, but even that wouldn't be difficult right now given how difficult it is to find AR parts individually.

These idiots cannot even pass a budget in a timely fashion. You have time to look for more options. I wouldn't trade for a home built project with a 50 cent scope. That's just me though

Considering the current climate, that sounds like a good trade if you just have to have an AR right now. On the other hand, I do not think all the threatened bans will come to pass. If you are willing to wait, I think things will settle down eventually. Just my thoughts.

As others have said, I wouldn't make the trade unless you're unhappy with the Kimber. That's a beautiful 1911, and even if the rifle really has been accurate and dependable so far, I just see it as a lopsided trade. I was pretty convinced the AWB would pass for a while there, but lately I'm thinking its less and less likely. If the rifle is everything you want, and you're displeased with the 1911, then go for it. Otherwise, I think you'll regret it later.

There is no question your overpaying for this trade but if they tossed in 10-12 Pmags we might talk.

All that being said if its worth it to you then its worth it.

no way would i trade that kimber for that ar. rest assured the ar panic will subside (already is beginning in some areas), and manufacturers are making ar's as fast as they can. just be patient. you'll be able to buy many different ar's in 6 months i believe.

As many others have said, I would hold on to the Kimber. That is a great 1911 that you would be trading for a VERY low-end AR. This craziness will pass once Feinstein's crap legislation is shot down.

Wait it out... the storm will calm before too long.

Keep the Kimber. I just bought a Bushmaster for 1K last week, and that was for NIB,and the auction price on it was around 2500.00. Just wait 'till things die down. And this was from another THR member.

ARs are overhyped for the most part. Its been hyped way way up there. Wait till things calm down. Remember you will be stuck with something you can't find bullets to shoot with . If you do, it be a $1 to 1.50 per round. The cost of ammo alone is not worth it . Dont ride the flood waters, stay on the sides .

Keep the Kimber. The AR you are trading for is already in postban configuration because you are in California, you aren't getting anything that would be banned under Federal legislation (except the bullet button, the new ban does ban those) so acquiring an AR to head off the Federal ban is pointless because you are already, in essence, living under it.

I think I have the same number of 1911's as I do AR's. If I had a choice between the 2, and I'm not crazy about Kimber, I would go with the 1911. That's a nice looking one you have and it's one of the top names. The AR is just a workshop project.
