I am in the process of repairing and refinishing a walnut stock from a very pricey air rifle of mine and sure could use some advice on how to fill in a small chip that it has. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Good day,

chip

they way I have done it is once your color is on the stock over the chip.
put some clear accraglass over it. you might have to use some clay to dam up around it. try to let it fill in, then after it cures put your clear coat over it.

With a square and fresh metal-working file work the chipped area to form two flat surfaces at 90 degrees to one another - a triangle cut. Cut an appropriate piece of wood from the inside of the stock - do not use other wood, or it will not blend good with the rest of the stock. The piece must match grain direction. Glue with Loctite 401 or any other quality cyanoacrylate glue. Sand, stain and etc. You must file the chipped area and the filler piece as flatter as you can, or the joint will be visible - use a long file that is wide at least as the chipped area.

Take sandings from the bare wood of the stock (not sandings from the initial removal of the finish). Mix with epoxy. Fill, let cure/harden, then sand to match contour of the stock.

It might not be appropriate in this case, but I have found few gunsmiths who can really repair (as opposed to fitting) stocks. I have had pretty good luck with furniture repair specialists, though. They consider repair of a small piece of wood (compared to, say, a 16 place dining room table) a piece of cake and generally won't charge much.
