advice on holsters for G23

just got a G23 and looking to pick up a quick holster for now. Then in a 2-3 months (when my concealed permits hopefully arrives) going to invest in a top quality IWB holster. But for now I saw on glock.com homesite they sell their basic "sport" holster for only 14$. Thats a killer deal. or is it? is this thing a waste of money and I should spend the 15 bucks extra for a blackhawk or fobus or a like brand? Thanks for everyones help. I would also like to use this one for future OWB use on winter days or days I'm wearing larger clothing.

I have 3 or 4 good leather or nylon holsters.

None of them any better, or as good as the Glock Plastic Fantastic Glock Perfection $9 holster I bought when I bought the gun 18 years ago!

*It can be cut to fit any belt size.
*It can be cut to carry at any angle.
*It carries close & tucked in.
*It is thinner then any other leather or nylon holster ever made.
*It weighs next to nothing.
*It doesn't stick to your cover garments.
*It can be washed in the kitchen sink to get the dirt out of it and put back on your belt.
*It provides good weapons retention.
*It only costs $14 bucks nowdays, if you find out you hate it.

Name me one other holster you can say all that about!

At least buy one to use, until you can spend lots of money and try to find something better?

If you don't have to CCW under a dress shirt & tie?

The Glock plastic holster will be more comfortable, and conceal as well under a coat, jacket or loose T-shirt.

At least on my old tender body.

BTW: I make custom holsters holsters for most of my guns.
But not for Glocks.

Blackhawk makes a really nice IWB leather holster - I picked one up for my Glock 27 and have had no issues or complaints whatsoever. The leather is sturdy, the belt clip retains very well, and the stitching is solid. The holster is quite a bit more spendy than what you were looking at (I think I ended up paying around $60) but I feel like mine will last a very long time.

Even when you have accrued the "Box-O-Holsters" that we all seem to, keep that cheap Glock holster. Another advantage, it can be worn right or left side. I took a class wih my G19 that required a back up gun for transition drills. My G26 carried in the Glock holster on the left side hip worked perfectly. I keep one in my range bag for emergencies. Its a good thing.
Anyway back to your question, I like Crossbreed, Galco, and C.O.M. for Kydex, but there are lots of good chocies out there. The problem is having the chance to see, hold, and wear different types until you see what works for you and your needs. For example, do you need to remove it of and on during the course of the day or can you put it on in the morning and leave it there until you hit the sack? Is certain concealment a big issue for you or not? I love leather OWB holsters but the fact is they show easily so if that causes you problems, legal or otherwise, better go with the well hidden IWB. I have been tempted many times to buy a great looking hand made holster from one of the venders at the gun shows, but really what would be the point, its "concealed carry", so whos going to get to see it?

When you get a leather holster check out Fist holsters #9 with a body protector. It has worked well for me for 5 years.

Why? If something works I have no innate need to spend more money than I have to.

Personally, I haven't used this particular holster, but I have used similar cost level polymer holsters such as the Uncle Mikes, Fobus, Blade-tech Revolution, and Blackhawk Sportster which all I got for under $20 each. Generally, as a class, this type of holster is durable and inexpensive. For OWB carry they work great.

For concealment I'd EVENTUALLY look at something in leather (preferably IWB), but I wouldn't be in a rush and even after you get that I personally like to keep a belt holster on hand for all my guns, so its not like you'll no longer have any need for it.

It is the gun owners choice, of course. I just like to treat my guns a little better than to let them ride in a plastic $20 holster. I have a harder time matching them to my wardrobe also. I carry open at work, and conceal fulltime using Blackhawk, Bianchi, Galco, Safariland, and DeSantis holsters. How defensible from a gun grab are the plastic ones? How to they hold up when in a ground fight? Do they protect the weapon from the times you bump into a door jamb and other things? Things I keep in mind when I'm holster shopping.

If they work for you, and you like them, keep it up. More quality holsters for me.

+ 1 for the Glock Sport holster

I have owned and carried a Glock for approx 15 years and the Glock Sport holster [ the one you picture ] is THE holster that I wear 95% of the time.

I have worn a Ritchie IWB when I want a deeper concealment and a Dale Fricke trigger block so as to wear 'mexican style' [ I do not reccomend that you try this till your WELL versed in CCW ].

The GSH is one of THE best designs and I am sure all pistol companys wish they could make such a fool proof and easy to use holster .

And yes you can do shoulder rolls and it stays put.

BUT = only to be worn for CCW and not open carry.

btw,worn a Glock 23 in the same holster that I wear the 19,17,35,27.

Then bought a GSH for the model 30 too.

I carry mine in a Bianchi paddle holster. They are very flexible in terms of placement on your belt and don't force you to buy new pants to fit a IWB holster. Loaded it is a little heavy for me and I find I keep yanking up my pants even with a heavy belt. I only carry it when I am concerned about where I am going, otherwise I have a S&W 442 in my pocket. Generally have both when I carry the Glock.

I have been carrying a handgun for just over 35 years on a daily basis. Yes I have the obligatory "box-o-holsters" in the bottom of the gun safe that contains a variety of kydex, plastic and leather that range from nightmares to holsters who's guns have been traded or sold.
The holster style and brand I keep coming back to is the Kramer belt scabbard in horsehide. My current version houses a G23 but will also fit a G22, G19, G17 or a G36. It has been in daily continuous use for about 15 years now. Maintenance is as simple as a light polish every few weeks.
I know cheaper holster will do the job but my old Kramer has never failed me plus it is comfortable and conceals well.

in the past few years my son has taken to holster manufacture learning to wet mold and hand bone horsehide in a variety of modified pancake styles and paddles. If I ever need a new one I may switch over to one of his.

For future reference, I have carried my old G23 in a Crossbreed Supertuck, 365 days a year in the Pacific Northwest. I have worn it with shorts and a T-shirt and while using heavy winter clothing. It is actually possible to forget you are carrying it. It is that comfortable. It can fit most sizes of belt and can be adjusted for cant as well. I can't recommend it enough, or at least one very similar. This holster was so effective, it lead to me getting rid of my LCP due to the fact that I never had a need or reason to carry the LCP.

I have one of the Glock factory holsters and it gets used alot. But, I also have a Fobus belt model that I like. But, I usually carry IWB with an Aholster kydex model, but with a 19 now, I sole my 23 and bought another 22..

Living in Florida, plastic holsters are the way to go. Sweat causes leather to go soft and deform.
