im,new to reloading have not done it yet, but been around guns all my life, i have a isv 1941 91/30 just finished bedding on ati stock shimed trigger, and slug the barrel it is .311 my question is two parts ,1, will that size create too much pressure and ,2, would i still use the 7.62/54 seating die if using a 7.62/39 bullit thanks

Cat: I am no expert on the 91/30 rifle or it's cartridge but I think I may be able to help you out. Speer makes a 150 gr bullet with a .311" diameter that would be suitable for your .311" bore(p/n 2217). This bullet was designed for the 303 British with an oversized bore. Your seating die would probably work since the both cases have the same diameter and both bullets have the same spitzer tips. Again, someone more knowledgable will jump in and give you better advice. Welcome to THR! :)

thanks for the help, i have been feeding it s&b 180 gr. but they are .308 in dia and are all over the place

If your barrel slugs to .311" then there are lots of choices for bullets that will work for you.

Any of these would be fine:

Your seating die will be perfect, but will have to be adjusted to seat the bullets to the correct depth -- as would be the case with any bullet.

The difference between 0.311" and 0.312" is not important. You will still need to start with a reduced powder charge and work up to find the accuracy "sweet spot" with each bullet for your rifle. Stick to published load data and you should have no trouble with pressure.

The .311 bullets will work just fine. I shoot them in all of my Mosins. One thing to keep in mind is that some brands of dies for the 7.62X54R only supply a .308 neck expander and loading data for .308 bullets. It has something to do with some Mosins that were made with .308 diameter bores. If you have that situation just purchase a 303 British expander for the make of dies that you have. I had to do that with Lee dies.

Yes the 303brit bullets(.311") will work better than standard .308" bullets, availible in 150gr and up.

But re-workup loads again, as a stout .308" 180gr load will have higher pressures when using .311" 180gr bullets with the same powder charge.

well, how much charge would i use for a .311 bullet placed in a sized up neck for a 7.62/54r using 180 gr and keep pressure from climbing, also using h-414 powder

Hodgdon says start at 49.0 gr. Max is 52.
