AES-10-B or Yugoslavian M72 RPK

I can only comment on the AES-10B.
Fun? You betcha. And you'll find nothing like it for less money.
BUT, it may need a bit of work. Furniture will be unfinished and it may require a considerable amount of cleaning (lots of cosmoline and shavings). Once cleaned up with stained/varnished furniture they are beautiful.
That being said, its still a Kalashnikov and I have no doubt it will run right out of the box.

I have no experience with that particular Yugo, but most of the Yugo AKM patterns I've seen have had a MUCH better finish than their Romy counterparts. However, I have no doubt the function of these both will be equal.

The Romy has a longer barrel, and if I'm not mistaken, it is chrome lined, the Yugo isn't.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. If the finish isn't a big deal to you, go for the Romy, I would.

I've got a AES-10B. The fist one had to go back for a floppy mag-well and canted front sight.

I;ve just had the current one refinished and the correct RPK bipod installed.

If you get one, get it from a dealer that has a good return policy. www.classicarms.com sold me mine and was easy to deal with when #1 needed to go back, hey sent me a UPS tag and everything.

The rifle itself is pretty good: 1.5mm receiver, windage adjustable rear sight, heavy barrel, decent trigger, and chromed bore. I shoot a lot of corrosive ammo so thee last is important for me.

Haven't shot the Yugo.

But the AES-10B is a great firearm. I don't think I've heard a cross word against it.

The first AES-10 rifle was made with the bipod in the wrong place and was markedly inferior.

But the AES-10B is accurate, runs like a top, and has good adjustable sights.

I saw an AES-10B in a store the other day. It had rust on the front sight assembly.

Well I like the looks of the AES-10-B better but I own a M70 sporter and I can say that the fit and finish is great for an AK so it worries me that the Romy may be a bit less, refined.

I have the 10B and it is an excellent rifle. Finish isn't as good as the Yugo, but the barrel is chrome-lined. Given it is $100 or so cheaper, the 10B is the way to go in my opinion.

Get the 10B!!!!!
Not sure if they still go for $399,but Gunbroker has one now
for $439!!!
I paid $425 for my 2,and it was money well spent.

I've heard only excellent things about the Yugo. I've heard some bad things about the AES-10B. Looking at availability, I would definitely go with the Yugo. It will be better made, with a thicker barrel and better internals. Yugos make better AKs than the Romanians.

Either way, you won't be getting a bad rifle. You pay for the difference in quality with the difference in the price.

I'd say Yugo. heavier barrel and the fins are cool looking. The Yugo's are more heavy duty...and heavier but its not a CCW. A guy that works at a local shop but a AES10B the shop had hanging up. Canted sights and the top cover kept popping off after each shot. The cover was an easy fix but the canted site required an AK style adjustment tool....a huge mallet.

I'd say it depends. I've had no problems with my AES-10B that aren't inherent to Century-imported Romanians in general. Shoots fine, and I feel like I got my money's worth.

If you're looking for a high quality heavy-style AK that doesn't need any refinishing or thorough scrubbing, get the Yugo.

But the AES-10B, if you get rid of the carry handle and replace the bipod, is probably as close to an authentic RPK as you're ever going to see for less than about 20 grand. Especially considering that not all RPKs have dimples. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Iraq_RPK_Machine_Gun.jpg

Actually, the Romanian and Yugo's have the same receiver construction (other than dimples), nominally the same barrel weight, the same trunions, the same trigger groups. The Yugo receiver and barrel are US made, which is a bit simpler on the 922 parts list, but the Romanian-made RPK reciever is the same gage steel as the US-made receiver. In the end, neither can claim to be more ruggedly-built than the other. Fundamentally the difference between the two will then lie in the Yugo's better finish and American assembly but the Romanian's new-condition parts and original

Yugo M72 hands down! Incredibly solid, heavy, dependable, and dripping with history-- I love mine soo much. If I was only able to keep one semi-automatic rifle of ALL that I own, it would be my M72.

What's odd is that both of those have the 45 degree gas front gas block in the 5.45 chambering. I thought it was 90 degrees for the AK-74 and newer rifles. Which, oddly enough, the AES-10b's (at least mine) have the 90 degrees.
