I love the idea of the various Trijicon sights that combine fiber optic and tritium illumination for day and night use without batteries. I hate the prices, though, as in most cases the sights cost more than the rifle I'd like to put them on. Does any other company offer a more affordable day/night optic without batteries?

I don't think so.

Much of the cost is passed along from the licensing & import fees imposed by the NRC in this country for regulating, importing, and selling items containing radioactive isotopes.

And that is basically what Tritium is.

Meprolite night sights are made in Israel and are cheaper then Trijacon's sights of similar quality for instance.

And so far, nobody has found anything else that works as well or as long as Tritium for power-free illumination in sights and optics.

The thing is that there are plenty of red dot sights out there for less than $100 and plenty of tritium night sight sets for about as much. Why should the combination of the two cost $400 and up to much higher? I know it's not quite that simple, and perhaps Trijicon has the patents locked up for the moment, but I am surprised that there are no more affordable options. TruGlo, for example, already has combination tritium/fiber optic three-dot pistol sights, you would think they would also offer some kind of battery-free optic.

I worked in product management for the industry and now work in sourcing, its actually quite expensive to manufacture both into one unit, even for China standards. Just like NV has, these will come down in price as processes are refined and more are made, but its quite intrusive to manufacture.

TruGlo offers their TFO - Tritium Fiber Optic sights. Their choices are a bit limited when it comes to long guns though. A front sight for a Rem 870 shotgun, for example, typically retails for $90.

(edit: doh, I see you already mentioned the TFO's... sorry)

What surprises me is that you dont see more optics that use fiber optics....

Seems like a great battery free solution for daytime illumination

Eotech style housing and trijicon fiber optics would be an interesting combo that I'd throw money at to try

The fancy version could have a solar panel/capacitor setup for night time illum.

3d print the whole thing to keep cost down
