Aftermarket stock for Savage MKII

I have a Savage MKII in 22lr that came with the basic wood stock. The cheek weld is really low, so I'd like to either get some sort of padding to make using a larger scope easier or get an aftermarket stock.

I'm tempted by the "bargains" over at Richard's Microfit, as they are not that much more than buying an add-on cheek piece, and then I get a nice stock out of the deal. I'm concerned though about the fit and bedding. Will I be giving up any bedding that Savage might have done with my current stock if I just drop the action into an aftermarket stock? Also, exactly how much "finishing" is required with these stocks?

And anyone know if the Savage 93 is the same action (and fit) as the MKII?

I bought one for my MKII a couple years ago. It took 8 months but I finally got it. There's quite a bit of finishing involved, but that's not hard to do. As for the bedding, you have some work ahead of you there too. I installed pillars and just hogged out wood to make room for a little epoxy bedding at the front and rear of the action. It settled into a tight fit and the groups were much improved. All in all, I'm glad I did it.

You don't need to pillar bed or even epoxy bed the stock. The gun fits in the Richards stocks pretty well. You will need to tinker around with the inlet a bit to make sure no wood interferes with the trigger action and such though.

I've recently gotten a Mk II and I am in need of the same thing. I was looking at the Richard's stocks but I doubt I'd wait eight months for one. Plink, do you have any idea why it took so long? They advertise a much faster turnaround than that.

Oh and sorry about the screen name. I'll try not to bring shame to it.

Plinky (any relation? haha), Richards is known for being slow at times. He gets swamped with work and runs stocks in batches based on popular action inlets at the time. I've also heard that he "forgets" sometimes. I had to nag him a bit to get my stock at all, and it was about 5 months after promised delivery date. From what I've seen in other posts, he does that sometimes. All in all, the stocks are worth the money, but they're rough and need a bit of work to get the fit tuned. A friend of mine ordered a stock in a more popular inlet (10/22) and got it in a few weeks.

I called Savage yesterday about a laminated BV stock. It would be $159 plus bottom metal and shipping. The thumbhole stock is more yet. Not knowing if the stock would be a better fit, I passed on it. May still be an option though.

The Savage parts lady was really sharp, knowing every configuration by memory and advising on interchangability pitfalls. Granted this may be a very common scenario for her. Even though I didn't get the stock I was left with a good feeling about their service..

I purchased a MK II BV with the laminated wood stock about a month ago. Last week I ordered a target stock from Sharp Shooter Supply, it comes with the trigger guard and mag surround. I won't have any use for the original stock and bottom parts if you are interested in it. I'm sure we could come to terms that would be more reasonable than new parts from Savage.
