well every night i have some neighboors that walk their dogs. ive had to ask them more then a few times to keep them out of my yard. the owners never keep the dogs on a leash and are not trained very well because they don't come when they are called.

more then a few times ive been growled at so i hit the dogs with a bamboo stick to scare them off.

im kinda at my wits end because the owners don't care and i don't want to be bit nor have my pure breed jack russel attacked when i let her out to do her thing in my back yard.

i rent otherwise i would build a fense.

ive tried contacting the humane society and all they say is that they can send someone out during hours of opperation (8am to 4pm) and have them talk with the people. well that won't work because i have yet to find where the people live and it seems like they work during the day anyways.

well last night it happened again, i told the owners that i don't want to see their dog in my yard again and they just laughed, so i told them that if it happends again i have the right if threatened by it to kill it and that i won't loose a wink of sleep over it.

so the owner laughed again and said that i wouldn't live a long life if i did so.

what would you do in this situation?

(1) Admit Dan Quayle was right, vote accordingly, and hope in 50 years or so things improve.

or

(2) Move.

This is not going to end well.

When you told the dog owner you would shoot his dog if provoked ( I don't care what you said that's what he heard) you escalated the situation. I would use pepper spray or some other non lethal method of dog control. Maybe some type of sound control

Definitely file a police report. Nobody should be telling his neighbor they're "not going to live long" over some dog nonsense. Rude dog owners are one thing but this guy is beyond the pale.

(I am kind of a hypocrite. My crazy upstairs lady claimed she would "get a gun" if I kept her up another night by "slamming cabinet doors all night". I didn't report her. She's still a more harmless breed than someone who lets their unleashed dog growl at the neighbors and then makes threats.)

Along lines of what tarugs might have meant ... maybe bribing the dog is a good idea. Call it nice doggy and throw it some dog biscuits? Dogs show gratitude better than people. Just a thought.
(I couldn't abide poisoning though).

Yes, file a police report. After something goes wrong (God forbid), your version of events can seem like an excuse. A public record (or two or three) of events before something goes wrong can be far more likely to be given real credibility.

I report the kids on four-wheelers who drive our country-roads like maniacs, not because I'm a killjoy, but because every five years or so, one of them kills himself in a head-on with a little-old-lady or a milk-truck, and invariably, the "little angel's" parents sue the innocent motorist. A public police record of the kid's prior behavior helps set the record straight.

Buy a can of bear spray, use it to mark the boundary between your yard and the road, preferably right before the person and dog come by so it's fresh for the pooch to smell. Peppers have often been used to discourage dogs as a repellent, I say bear spray because it comes in large sizes so you should have some left over if the owner decides to make trouble.

....i don't want to be bit nor have my pure breed jack russel attacked when i let her out to do her thing in my back yard.

Do you leave your dog out unattended? Without a fence or leash?

If so, you and your neighbor are both wrong, and has already been stated, this will all end badly. You can't claim the high ground if you're also at fault on a given issue. ( Threats never gain any ground and usually only result in losing it. Action gets the job done. )

You really do need to call your local LEOs and talk to them about this, since they're the ones most apt to give you accurate information. ( Well, more accurate than you're likely to get on the internet, anyway... )

Good luck.

Go to the walmart and buy a ton of cayenne pepper and spread it on your property line. One sniff and the dog will not want anything to do in your yard. Now you also need to remember to keep Fluffy, your dog away from that area.

What Peyton said. I've used the stuff to break my dogs of digging holes. Just sprinkle some in their favorite holes and they give that habit up quick, fast and in a hurry.

Don`t paint yourself into a corner. File a police report. Does your area have some kind of lease law??

Here`s a thought. Get yourself a non-lethal defense weapon. Mace or something like that. Next time that mut gets gets up close and personal, give him/her a blast in the face. I bet it won`t take long till that mut figures you mean business. :)

Maybe buy some dog treats, and the next time you see the dogs, give them some treats. You might not be considered a friend by the dogs, but you won't be considered a threat by them. And wait until you guys get a good blast of winter, that'll cut down on the dog walks.
Sorry, I know that's not very good solution, but it is the best I can come up with now.

what would you do in this situation?

Stop jaw-jacking with the neighbor, for starters.

Keep a camera by the door, and ever time you see them walk by, stand by the door and watch them. If the dog comes on your yard, go outside and take pictures.

Then call the cops. Don't say anything to the guy, even if he gives you a mouthful. Just document, and report. If he's smart, he'll get the message and keep his animal under control. If not, you've got a prefectly clear visual record and history of reports to back you up when you take legal action.

my dog will never leave my yard, i let her out to do her thing without a leash but she is trained that no matter what when i say sit or snap my fingers she stops dead in her tracks and sits down.

well last night i was in my garage with a buddy talking. the people from the other night walked up the road with their dog on a leash this time. so i walked to the top of my drive way and got their attension.

i told them, thank you for having their dog on a leash (its a law here to do so) and that the reason i told them that was because of what has happened with the other people and their dogs and that i won't tolerate inconciderate people.

i told them that i hope to not have any issues with them at all and that im just trying to protect myself, my family, and my pets.

they understood and that was the end of it. but i did let them know that i have contacted animal control and made a statement with them as well as the local PD so it is on record.

great idea on the cayanne pepper, my wife is thai so we have a lot of it in the house so i guess ill have to go lay some down at the property line.

also no its not a option to move.

thanks for the help and insight everyone. i truly hope this is the end of it.

Snapping your finger to your dog isn't going to help when s/he has a 180 lb german shepherd attached to its ass. Imo, leashes work both ways - so you can yank the dog back in the house if needed.

Glad it has ended well for you. I can't say enough good things about our fence. It cost a bit, but I'm glad for it and the two dogs (GSDs, btw) love it.

"i have the right if threatened by it to kill it" you claimed you would act in self defense if attacked. "the owner laughed again and said that i wouldn't live a long life if i did so"- he threatened your life which is a crime. Get it documented and on file. Press charges if possible.

a video cam would be a good way to document, or any camera.
as #9 said spray the boundary but pure ammonia is much cheaper and a dog will not cross over it. I am a dog lover BTW but have had problems with inconsiderate neighbors dogs. nothing like a squirt of ammonia on the snout to discourage them from ever comeing back onto your property.

and that was the end of it.

I bet it wasn’t. Based on what I’m reading here you are the one escalating it. You keep making statements to the other party that don’t need to be made. You keep egging it on. Never miss a good opportunity to shut up.

I doubt he'd need to, a 180 GSD is morbidly obese ... wouldn't be able to catch the jack russell in that case.

Since there's a leash law, it seems pretty straightforward - call the police.

Barring that, I agree pepper spray is a better option than a stick. Get one of the big cans of Fox Labs.

go to the grocery store and ask the butcher for a bunch of trimmed off fat. Tell him your making deer sausage at home and need a few pounds. Leave it in a plate near the sidewalk for rover. A good case of the squirts at 2am should make his owners happy.

Report the next three incidents, then Shoot it on the forth! Make sure you tell the police you will shoot it on the forth time.
