just reporting on what looks like a good ammo deal on BRASS 7.62x39.
I may buy some for my mini-30 if the stuff is good.

however my question is, is this stuff any good? or only good for reloading componants...

fomr the website

1,120rd case (28 boxes): $179.20

Beautiful Surplus Yugoslavian 7.62x39 ammunition. This is the best shooting 7.62x39 ammunition available. Features a 123grn lead core copper jacketed bullet, brass case, and berdan corrosive primer. Packed 10rds on a steel charger (stripper clip), 40rds (4 chargers) in a box, and 1,120rds (28 boxes) sealed in metal tin inside of a hinged latched wooden case. At these prices... while supplies last!

The reason it is so cheap is that it is corrosive, I believe it is made by Prvi Partizan, from the 1970s.

edit-- It's also not easily reloadable because of the berdan priming.

Prvi Partizan is the top of the line combloc ammo, this stuff was made for the Jugoslav National Army back in the '70s or '80s.
Nowadays Prvi Partizan makes non corrosive at a decent price, all in all if it's yugo it's good.

I don't buy corrosive based ammo unless it is CONSIDERABLY cheaper than non-corrosive ammo.

I can get TULA 7.62x39 ammo from Cabela's for $3.79 for a box of 20. That is 19 cents per round. The Yugo corrosive ammo is 16 cents per round. While that is cheaper, it is not cheap enough. If they were 10 cents a round then I would consider buying them.

I am not against shooting corrosive ammo (I shoot it in my Mosins and my Tokarev), but it better come with a big discount.

Has anyone actually put some 7.62x39 through a chrono? I keep hearing that the mil-spec Yugo is hotter than wolf/bear/tiger however I have not met anyone that has actually measured it. I'd keep it around for WTSHTF ammo if there were a substantial difference. Thanks.

I put a couple hundred rounds of the yugo through my AK at a carbine class. It worked well no issues, I thoroughly cleaned my gun afterwards and have had no problems.

I have seen someone reload cases that were originally Berdan-primed by drilling out a center hole for a Boxer primer. I am not a reloader, so I can't speak for the safety of doing this, but it did indeed work and gave him reloadable cases.

The guy in the 2nd YouTube video tells that he uses his de-primer and pushes very hard causing a small hole to be poked through the berdan mechanism causing a hole to be poked through. He could then use boxer primers.

I am not a reloader (seen firsthand at ranges what happens when "experienced" reloaders make a mistake reloading) so this is probably not a recommended technique.

I've put several thousand rounds of Golden Tiger through my Yugo SKS and find it better than Wolf. It's new production and not even slightly corrosive (which is like saying slightly pregnant).Obviously MMV.

You can reload berdan primed cases in practice, I do. They are more difficult to reload than boxer primed but it is possible. The availability of berdan primers had been an issue for some time but as EP stated they are now becoming available again. Just be aware that there are several different sizes (diameters) of berdan primers, so check your cases to see if the currently imported ones are the correct ones for you. Some of the 7.62x54R and .303 use larger diameter primers than the .217 diameter ones being brought in now. There may be other cartridges with larger primers but I have ran into these two.

Which is still crap imported ammo.

Oh jeeze

Has anyone actually put some 7.62x39 through a chrono?

Yes. I chrono'd some Brown Bear 125g JSP out of a Century Yugo underfolder M70AB2 with a 16" barrel. It was surprisingly warm at just over 2420 fps on average (21 fps SD). It also deformed and penetrated nicely when I tested it in wet mass. Considering that the ammo is also very reliable, and reasonably accurate, I see no reason not to use it for defensive purposes.
