Hey all, new here so this may have been asked 1,000 times, but I’m with a group heading to a bear hunt and flying with rifles. Can we put two guys’ rifles in 1 locked case? Trying to save on baggage costs and people having to purchase cases just for this.
Thanks!!!

Don't be surprised if they ask you for a key too some carriers will want you to separate ammo and firearm so take a small case with you just in case

I've flown with a couple of two-gun cases several times. Mostly two rifles, but sometimes one rifle and one shotgun. I'd also slip a couple of handguns and some ammo in each case as well. Make sure you have the approved type of locks on the cases.

I place 1 .460 mag, 3 auto loaders, and enough ammo to make you smile in one case!

Awesome. Thank you all for your help!! I’d say we’re good, but a phone call shouldn’t hurt.
there is no one that will
give you a correct answer . airline employees don’t know much.

here what you need. I travel all the time with pew pews

Hard sided case
must have 2 locks
gun unloaded
and you have the only set of keys ( do not use TSA locks)

also, make sure that the case cannot be open with the locks on. Put washers on the lock to prevent the case from opening

You were correct, the airline really couldn’t tell me.

that all makes sense. So it doesn’t matter who the owner of the guns are in the case, correct? I can just say both are mine, and the guy with me won’t draw questions if he’s going on a hunt without claiming a gun?

if they ask who the owners of the firearm is, never lie, it’s a crime to lie to a federal agent

years of traveling with a gun, I have never been ask “ Who is the owner of the gun”. They ask:

is the gun unloaded
is the ammo in the original packaging
are you the only person who has the key to the locks

When you get to the ticketing counter ask this:
I would like to check a firearm

they will give you a red card that you sign stating the gun is on unloaded.

then 2 things will happen:
1: Tickets agents puts the gun case through the baggage belt and ask you to wait around for 15 minutes and incase TSA needs to contact you

2: They escort you and the gun case to a TSA inspection area, they open the case and do a swab test for explosives and such. If your gun is not clean, it will alarm the swab spectrometer. Then they call a TSA supervisor and he come looks at the case.

Give yourself a extra 30 minutes for the process

what case are you using? I use a a padded Pelican case. I would be more worried about the Airport ground crew damaging your gun then anything else. They will not be gentle and will toss your case around like a bowling ball. Also Open your gun action to show clear. It puts the TSA and ticket Agent at ease.

As long as the case is big enough for both rifles. I have flown with my handguns and the wife's in the same case. I have never been asked who owned which firearm. There are lots of other airline tips and tricks that have been posted on here as well, so be sure to search those out too. Might save you some hassle.

Don't be surprised if they ask you for a key too

But don't give them one. TSA regulation require you have the only key. They once asked me for my key after I'd boarded, and I told them I'd be happy to go down and open the case BUT TSA regulations prohibited me from giving the key to anyone.

They loaded the case (which held two match rifles) and the plane departed.

TSA is not concerned about who own what gun, or anything gun law related. They only care about safety the airport and aircraft.

Never give your keys to anyone, even a TSA agent. When I’m ask to open my case, the TSA agents make me unlock it and they handle it from there.

We used to travel by air all the time, have all 4 of our handguns in one case, when we go through TSA the only comment I've ever received was one time a few years back flying out of San Antonio about "how many guns I had - why's a pretty girl like you need all them guns?"... Not once from ANY other airport (even in California)... Told them I was a target shooter and needed to stay in practice... the kindly rookie started wanting to give me a short interrogation; fortunately, his supervisor showed up (wondering what was taking so long) and pulled mister nosey aside...

BTW I use "TSA compliant" combo locks on my firearm cases... and even then, the TSA guy has me unlock and relock the cases to do the inspection.

In the fine print of the regs, that's supposed to e a no-no, as the baggage handlers are presumed to have copies of the six key patterns used by "TSA Locks."
Now, not everyone read (or abides by) "the fine print." Such is life.

Welcome to our craziness here.

Agree

Please know that you CANNOT use a TSA Combo Lock.

Use the Strongest most secure pad lock you can afford!
