A quick question if anyone has an answer I'd appreciate it. I'm flying from Wisconsin to Florida and would like to take a handgun. I checked here with my airline. No problem. Put it in a hardcase that is locked and declare it at check in. Ammo in the same case, in the box it came in. The airline didn't know about any Florida restrictions. Since it arrives in Florida in my luggage I don't see any problem once I'm there. My question concerns the return trip. Should it work the same leaving Florida, as when I leave Wisconsin, or is there any differenence I need to be aware of. I'd just as soon not have any hassle if I can avoid it. Thanks for any feedback from my fellow travelers.

Just one other thought. Are there any restrictions on non-residents that are visiting Florida having a handgun?(Other than concealed carry and normal restrictions).

check packing.org for your states reciprocity agreements with Florida. If your carry permit is good in FL you should be good to go.

Thanks for the info. Still not sure if I'll take it or not. I guess you have to do it once to find out how it works.

It's worth the hassle

"Florida law allows any person who can legally own a firearm to carry it in his/her vehicle without a license or permit, even loaded, so long as it is "securely encased" and "not accessible for immediate use" (and the statute plainly states that simply placing the firearm in an unlocked glove compartment or briefcase is sufficient, for example)."

When I flew last time I checked a bag... the main thing was that the Ammo box, was secured (ie: I used rubber bands around the sides. Also the agent required that the Ammo Box not be in the same locked case that the Firearm was located in, but the Ammo could still be in the same bag.

So
1. secure the ammo, either tape the slits of the box, or Rubber Band it.
2. Lock Firearm in Hard Locking Case, seperate from ammo
3. Only allowed to have 11lbs of ammo max
-which would have allowed around ~14-15 boxes of 38spl Ammo (so 200 rounds will not put you over)
4. Do not give anyone your key, only you retain the key or the combination to your locking case (this was in order to keep the firearm secure)
5. Make sure the firearm is clear before stowing it

They may attempt to place a sticker upon your exterior bag, to signify a firearm... but this was not allowed by the TSA when I flew, and I don't think it has been changed yet either. ( I know this is covered more on Glocktalk sticky)

Shouldn't be a problem, just realize that Sterile Environments are different in different airports... some airports might allow carry from a Restroom to the outside, but others may include any portion of the airport as sterile.

If you have enough time it's possible to get a Florida CCW permit even though you are from a different state. If you have a permit in your home state it is fairly easy to meet Florida requirements.

Cheers,

I "drag" two hand guns to CA and back to HI every year(fire season) and have never had a problem.

Offer to show them the guns (I take mine apart), show them the guns in the "lockable case" and the locks. I then sign the form, insert it in the case, lock the case, and then take the luggage down to the TSA x-ray station. There I ask them if they want me to lock the luggage first or let them look at it through their "magic machine" before I lock the luggage. Some places want the bag locked before they look at it, some don't.

Ammo - I don't take any with me, I buy it when I get to my destination - I buy "Glaser" ammo, which is illegal in HI - don't ask me why, I haven't figured that one out yet.

Anyway, take your guns - you'll be happier with them around! And safer.

The biggest thing to remember is that if they ask for your keys to "check the luggage" - you have to be present! NEVER give your key to the luggage or gun case to them with out you being present - it's stated in the TSA regs that you HAVE to be present for them to open your bag!

Other than that - I've found the TSA people to be ignorant, but NOT stupid. If they ask about one of my guns, I take the time to talk to them about them.

One that always gets asked about is the NAA mini .22 Mag. It fascinates these people! This trip home, the TSA agent was female and she wanted to know if they make a "garder holster" for it - d*mned if I know!

Gentle winds,

crashresidue:

That NAA 22 mini mag has always scared the bejezus out of me. I could never feel comfortable carrying something that small, but then again I've never shot one, nor handled a loaded one.

How do you typically carry it, with the folding grip style cover? To me it's always looked too small for my short stubby hands, and I can't figure out how one shoots it without losing the handle on it.

Im interested on your thoughts on this one....
Has the TSA actually registered/figured out it was a gun upon inspection, or have they just glossed over it, untill you picked it up to prove it was unloaded? I could see someone overlooking it if they haven't seen one before... I did a double take the first time I saw it years ago myself.
