Nope, I just sanded away the side of it at the base a little so that it stopped being 'straight' and became 'curved'

I don't think that counts;)

Assisted openers for instance, are actually illegal I reckon (read the law and you'll see why)

Best keep quiet about that one, I want to order a emerson kerambit as soon as funds allow:)

The Emerson knives arn't assisted openers, they use the 'Wave' feature. It's just like opening it with a thumb stud, except your pocket does the opening instead of your thumb. They are completely legal, it's the Kershaws and Camilluses etc that are illegal, but still widely available from respectable dealers.

Still having trouble working out how those assisted openers work?

Is it a torsion bar basis?

Yes. Basically, with a switchblade you press a button in the handle and a spring opens the blade. With an assisted opener, you open the blade a tiny bit with a a thumbstud, flipper, Spidey style hole etc and then a torsion bar takes over and flicks the knife open the rest of the way.

The Restriction of Offensive Weapons Act (1959) banned the sale, importation and manufacture (but not ownership) of "Any knife which has a blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife".

Note "in or attached to the handle of the knife". Since with thumbstuds, flippers and Spidey style holes, the device used to open the knife is the blade itself, since these things are a part of the blade. And the blade is "in or attached to the handle of the knife".

Therefore, I believe any court would rule that these are indeed assisted openers. But don't tell anyone :p

So... For optimum legality you bring your handle, blade, and an allen key and put the knife together when you need it.

Not in public because if you take the blade out of a folder, that becomes a fixed blade which you can't have without good reason (of course, if it was a locking folder, it makes no difference).

Nothing illegal about ordinary folders on private land or if you have good reason to carry it. But you could import all the components to build a switcblade and put it together when you use it, but that act is 'manufacturing' the illegal item in question, so you've only avoided one law to break another.

Fosbury,

You quoted about how you made your baton UK legal (which I'm still un-clear about)

So I bet you'd love to know how I got my UK legal push dagger:evil:

All enquires are welcome.

@ my baton: The law restricts 'straight truncheons' so I sanded it so that it became a 'curved truncheon'.

Hmm...the law mentions that the blade must protrude from between two fingers. Did you make the handle protrude from between two fingers, with the blade on the end? Hmm, might have to try that lol.

Looking at the letter of the law it specifically mentions that 'friction lock' batons are restricted - what about an Autolock? :)

Er...you made the blade go between a thumb and a finger instead of two fingers?

Is that not how every other kind of knife is designed to be held?

Put a gut-hook on one side and then it has a purpose:)

Customs don't have a problem with it so neither do I:D
