Airweight help

As some of you may know, I have back issues. Due to these problems, I've gone to the S&W 637 Airweight as my main carry piece. As much as I like it, I don't care for the short grip. It's bad enough to hang on to it when shooting regular .38 Special ammo. However, I just returned home from trying the .38 Special +P for the first time. I can absolutely say that I hate those grips when shooting +P.

I'm looking for a grip that has a greater surface area and yet still be comfortable. The problem, I can't find anything bigger that would fit it. All the replacements I've seen so far are exactly the same, just with different brand names. Anyone have any ideas?

Try to get a 3 figger rubber grip, maybe Houge has some of there soft rubber grips with 3 fingers,contact them and check. I have a CA that wieghs 12oz and wanted a smaller grip (2 finger like yours) Got one and went to the range. Stupid ,Stupid. Took it off ,will never use it again . Went back to the 3 finger grip that came on it.

This Hogue grip will fit a M642. It is not as compact as the factory, so that is the trade off.

Well, I've tried Hogue and Pachmayr, they don't have what I'm looking for. Slamfire, those are the exact grips I'd like to have, but they don't fit the Airweight. The Airweight grips have screws in the center of the grips, both sides. Thanks for your help though.

Anyone else have any helpful ideas?

The position of the factory grip screws are irrelevant with the Hogue grips. The Hogue grips fasten from the bottom,You take the original grips and screws, put them in a baggie. mark the baggie, put them up for later, then forget where you put them up

Pachmyr Compacs are my next favorite after T grips.

2075 rami Don'y go by what you see with how you think Houge grips install. They have a clip that fits over the pin at the bottom of the frame that helps to hold the stock grips in place and that then use's a screw to pullthe grip upward and keep it tight. Also a +p in a short barrel is not worth the extra blast and recoil . Some of the newest loads for defence are not =P and are also low flash. Like hoarnady's Critical Defence line

I have a dozen packet exactly like that but I know where MOST of them are

The pictured revolver is a Chief Airweight. It had factory grips exactly like the bottom two airweights.

Here is a M&P 340 same butt style with Hogue Monogrips. Probably too large for pocket carry, and in that case the Bantams are superior.

As you can see no screw holes and as indicated a different mounting approach which works nicely on J Frames.

You might also wish to try the Crimson Trace Laser Grip Model 305, which will also fit. It uses the screw mount you are referring to as does its smaller brethren the 405 and less expensive model 105.

As DAdams noted, the three Crimson Trace grips for S&W J frames are not identical. The 105 and 405 are two fingered and the 305 three fingered. I made that mistake and had to pay a restocking fee, but it was all my fault.

I think I'll give the Hogue a try. Although I also like the crimson tracer grip idea, it will just have to wait until I get a job, and in this economy, that could take a while.

HL1: I have a couple of boxes of the Critical Defense in standard .38 Special that I plan to carry from now on. I agree, with a barrel that isn't even 2 inches long, +P is just totally ridiculous. I'll keep what I have in +P and put it to use in my eventual new GP100 6 inch barrel. Of course, after I land a job.

2075 Rami, I have a 340 M&P .357 magnum snubbie, and I also found the small J frame grip is unacceptable, especially when firing some hot magnums. I could never seem to keep the gun from slipping in my hand. I tried several different full-size aftermarket grips, some were too small, some too big, but for me the one that was "just right" came directly from Smith & Wesson. It's the standard Smith & Wesson full-size J Frame grip. It's one that's often over looked as people start searching the after-market, but it's the one that finally got my vote.

$35 ordered directly from S&W. I now shoot my J frame much better than I could with the "shorty" grip that it came with. I never have to re-adjust my grasp, and it allows very confident rapid fire shooting, even with hot ammo.
