I think I'm pretty much certain that I'm never going to see an AK-12 here in the United States (the civilian version, if there ever is one). But I'm looking into AK's here in the near future, and was wondering what aftermarket parts are available to give me much of the same functionality on an AK-47 that the AK-12 now provides. Is such a thing possible? I'd like to get the ambidextrous features of the AK-12 and its picatinny rails, but in the AK-47 platform.

I'd say getting some midwest industries front rails and a Parabellum or Texas Weapons System dust cover on your AK would be a good start. A Dublin Weapons System forward non-reciprocating charging handle would probably be another good addition to make it more AK-12-ish. Although I wish the latter would also make a railed version of their charging handle system. Adding a side folding collapsible stock from either ACE or Bone steel would also give you the side-folder capability. I would go with the Bone Steel as theirs has a sturdier lockup versus the ACE stocks, and are also much more wallet-friendly. As for ambidextrous fire controls, I'll wait for someone else to chime in, as I don't know of any systems.

An AK 12 does look pretty sweet. But I agree. Don't hold your breath waiting for one to show up here.

-v- has some pretty good ideas as far as I'm concerned.
The only thing I can think of to add would be that UltiMak also makes a "lower" rail system if you decide you don't want Midwest Ind..for whatever reason.

I'm not trying to make an AK 12, but the I use the UltiMak "lower" handguard and it works just fine too.
I don't have the TWS dust cover, but I've seen some pretty good reviews of it.

Not the best pics of the rail, but you get the idea....
