How do you get a semi-automatic ak-47 that's decent for cheap? Do you find a used one and buy it? Or is it cheaper/ just as cheap to get a parts kit and find a reciever? Where can you get an ak reciever that's inexpensive?

The only thing I will do to it is kvar stocks and maybe a different sight. By the way I'm thinking of a 7.32x39mm gun; not a .223/5.56 or .308. How does the 5.45x39 compare to the 7.62x39?

If you just want a basic AK with no work, you can get a romanian WASR for under $400. There are also Bulgarian 5.45x39mm kits on US NoDak Spud receivers on the market at $500 right now.

However, if you want a quality gun, spend $350 on a Saiga, $100 on conversion parts, and a couple of hours with a Dremel and a drill. You'll get a brand-new Russian AK, made alongside the current Russian service rifles with many of the same parts.

Nothing beats the Saiga basic conversion for all around value.

All you need:

Saiga AK ~$385 +15.90 for a NICS, and some sales tax.

So, let's say:

Rifle $425

Dinzag Conversion kit $40
Tapco G2 Trigger Group $45
AK Pistol Grip $10
AK Buttstock $30
Bullet Guide Kit $25
AK Retaining Plate $9

So that's about $585 for a brand new, top notch AK.

Depends upon what you call cheap. Three years ago $350 was high, today it is bottom dollar. You should be able to find one listed at Gun Broker for $450-550

Took mine (ver.21) to the range for its baptism, and after a few work-in magazines, rattled off surplus ammo like a champ and is a RIFLE, unlike anything in 7.62x39, imhp.

I still don't know why the ver.21 didn't sell better. Everything you want, most of the conversion work done for you, which means only ONE part of your choice to change to use the big fat mags. All that and it's in some good-lookin' thumbhole wood stock furniture!

Does anyone just keep a Saiga OEM??? Looks like a serviceable rifle as is at a really low cost.

It's a serviceable rifle at a low cost in factory configuration, but it balances like crap and the trigger sucks, conversion fixes that.

If you don't mind being limited to factory and SureFire magazines and thus don't install a bullet guide, you can keep the conversion cost pretty low. This guy did it for less than $85.
