I have the itch for a "fun gun". My LGS has the AK-74's in 5.45x39 for $475. I plan on trading in 2 shotguns for it. Just looking for opinions on the guns and any feedback on the round.

Thanks
Adam

I have a Romanian WASR '74 built by the Century Arms monkeys. The front sight is canted off to the side a little, but otherwise, it's flawless. It's plenty accurate. I've seen the shredded and fragmented bullets; I'd peg it at "deadly enough", and as for reliability: it's a friggin' AK, it's good to go. I run a cheap red dot mounted on the X-47 rail system. It's a good carbine. Also, get your ammo at AIM Surplus in Ohio. It's $130/1080 rounds. That's a hella good price.

Just picked up a bulgarian 74 built on a Nodak spud receiver. Its a really fun gun. Almost no recoil at all and the surplus ammo is so cheap its hard not to just shoot for the sake of making noise and light.

For a "fun gun", yes, the AK-74 can be a lot of fun. Do you have some more info on the specific rifle that your LGS has (brand/maker/etc.)?

The round is relatively inexpensive, and more forgiving in terms of recoil than the 7.62 round.

I liked the ones I owned. I did not like cleaning the brake or the muzzle face. A whole lotta smuts in there. It was otherwise a really pleasant rifle.

Just so your aware, AIM Surplus has Romanian AK-74s for $399. Centerfire has WASR-2 (AK-74 type) for $429, and Tantal (Polish 5.45x39) for $449. So the price is average - personally I would be careful about a Century build. Since this is a Century be sure to check for a number of things
- is the front sight/gas tube canted?
- is the furniture fit flush, or is it "wiggly"
- does the magazine fit properly.

I just picked up a AK47 from Centerfire, the only reason I didn't get the 74 was they were out of ammo for it, and I was going shooting the next day. Anyway, they will look the rifle over to make sure the sights aren't canted before they ship.

Also, unless I am mistaken, (like they changed their price) they have the 74s for $369.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I attempted to trade in 2 shotguns for one today and they wpuldn't give me an even trade.....BS if you ask me. I'll have to save up and buy one outright.

You probably did o.k. on (missing) that deal, unless those were very cheap shotguns.

The AK-74 is a pure joy to shoot. It's my "go-to" rifle for training and competition.

Generally, they will ruin (in a good way) the stereotypes about poor AK accuracy, if you know what you're doing and learn to work with the gun.
