I gun-novice friend of mine is getting an AK (Romanian 7.62x39), and has asked me to pick up some accessories for him. He's left the details up to me, but it needs to include ammo and at least one or two mags. I have $185 to work with. I'm thinking a case of ammo and two or three 30- or 40-round magazines. Or possibly a half case of ammo, five mags, a good IPSC-style belt pouch for a magazine, and maybe a few bucks left over. BTW, I'll be getting this stuff at a fairly large gun show coming up, so I won't have to pay for any shipping.

For a budget of $185, what would you guys get?

Get only Polish mags. They're polymer, but not ugly like the waffle mags you'd normally see. They're also very robust and don't wobble nearly as much when seated into the well. I got some for $14 each at a gun show recently.

Chipperman, the problem with the drums is that buying one would leave almost no money for ammo.

$114 for a case of wolf FMJ, the rest at CDNN.com on there surplus steel mags at around $18 bucks a mag.

Minator where in Texas is a case of Wolf $114? Last show I went to they wanted $160 a case. The best price I have seen online is about $140 before shipping.

Ian-A sling would be handy if he doesn't already have one. Mags (stick with the 30's the 40's sometimes have issues) and mag pouches. As much ammo as you can get with the rest of the money.

Ian, I'd recommend finding the best deal you can on ammo and loading up, especially if you don't have a local outlet that has it cheap. I end up paying at at least $20 more per 1000 rounds no matter what I get because of shipping.

Getting 1000 rounds is a must (although if you want to cut costs, getting 500 is fine), and then get 5 or so regular steel mags (Polish or Bulgarian Waffle mags are nice but are not worth spending the extra money on at this point), a sling, and if you are in the mood to spend a little extra, a PSO 4x scope.

You won't need to buy rings because you already have a base , and you'll enjoy a very nice scope for a very good price ($85 or so).

Welcome to the world of Kalashnikov's.

Yeah, but it's easier to buy ammo and regular mags with pocket change down the road. A drum will require a chunk of money, which you have right now.

Given the current state of things, I'd probably be tempted to spend most of the budget on ComBlock steel 30rd magazines. Ammo isn't likely to peak much more in price, but greater-than-ten-round magazines may be a whole lot more expensive come next summer. :uhoh:

TDI Ergo Grip and Polish Mag. I HIGHLY recommend the Polish mags over the steel and Bulgarian waffles. Once you use them, you'll understand why I prefer them over all others. I should note, however, that I had to take the dremel to the mag-well of my RomAK (GP WASR-10). Like many others before it, Century didn't do that great of a job to accomodate high-cap mags. The Polish mags, in fact, would catch on the burs. After the dremel work, however, magazines of all sorts seated perfectly.

Until I get my hands on one, how about cluing me in on the secrets of their goodness? :)

While on this subjest are there any differences in the handguards on the 47 vs the 74. Are they interchangeable.

Yes and no. On the AK47 they are smooth like this.

On the 74 they have a bump like this. Sorry I only had a pic of an AKS74U but the handguards are the same just shorter.

Both are interchangable on each other.

I will vote for a case of Wolf ammo, a GI canvas bag (think big green purse) and the rest in com-block steel 30 rounders. Why? Steel is stronger than plastic. They work. They are not expensive. Ammo is needed for practice and the bag is for carrying the 4 or 5 mags you will be able to get. Perfect set up for a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI/bug-out/Militia/Homeland Defense, Rifle

As for a 75 rounder? why? Other than a novelty, all a 75 rounder will do is make the rifle too heavy to carry all day and heat the barrel up to dangerous ylevels during an extended mag-dump session. The AK is an individual weapon not a crue-serve.
