Hi y'all,
I'm stuck at a brick wall. I have a Arsenal AK-47 with synthetic stock and quad rail receiver. The only sights it has are the stock sights. I am in the process of selling my HK45C with 450FMJ and 120JHP for $825. But I don't know what to do with that money after selling the handgun? Should I purchase an EO Tech Holo sight for my AK or put the money down for a used Sig AR from Collectors for $1995.99 that come with a Magpul folding stock, EO Tech Holo Sight, Magnifier that fold to the left. I was at first considering the Colt Leo AR but when the clerk told me about the piston that the Sig has, that really made me want the Sig even though I have heard nothing but good stuff about the Colt Leo, which is also $1995.99 but it only comes with the magpul stock and quad rail and I know the EO Tech sight is around $500 itself. I have fired 2000+ rounds out of my AK seamlessly without a single problem and if I can get that out of an AR, that would be perfect. Even though the 7.62 carries much more weight with it. So keep the AK and modify it, buy the used Sig, or would the Colt Leo with DI be a better buy? Thank you

I will be frank in saying I simply do not believe that piston ARs really add any real advantage and they bring their own issues. A quality DI AR is a highly reliable gun. People talk about them needing to be clean. That is not necessarily true. They, like most guns, simply need to be lubricated. Google filthy 14 for an example of a good DI gun's reliability. I have of course seen lesser quality guns that are jam-o-matics

What quad rail is on you Arsenal and where are you thinking out mounting the eotech?

The RDS set up I like is a aim point micro T1 or H1 on an ultimak gas tube or a MI optic specific top rail for their handguards.

If $2000ish is you budget and you want an AR I would get a Noveske (or a noveske upper on a lower you've put together if you want to save some money) and put an aimpoint pro on it.

You could save some money an get the Colt and go with an aimpoint pro or micro and have a good rifle and as you shoot it add anything you find your self wanting (different stock, grip, or whatever).

If I wanted a piston gun I would get a SCAR.

I don't know about this newest sig rifle but the last few they have brought out have been pretty serious let downs IMHO.

As to modded ak vs AR, I think it depends on intended use and personal preference. I really like both AKs and ARs. I also believe the AK can be dramatically improved with well thought out modifications. Which I prefer depends largely on what I am doing.

I would not choose either the EoTech or the Sig piston AR.

I believe the Aimpoint to be much better for most uses than the EoTech as far as 1X optics go. Better battery life, better controls, and better reliability.

For the rifle, I'd get a Sig based on the 550 series. Those are piston guns that were designed from the ground up as piston guns. Not a kludge retrofit.

Keep the K!

Keep the AK and modify, dont let it go. If you have to wait a lil while to get the Sig, so be it. I dont know why anyone would pay anything over 800 for any type of rifle whatsoever but thats just me. Just got a Bulgarian ssr-85c-2 for $500 :what:

+1 on keeping the AK. I was going to buy an AR with my tax return but I decided I can set up my AK the way I like it and buy another bolt rifle for what it would cost to set up an AR. It really depends on what you want though. If you are looking for a tack driver the AR has an obvious edge. Personally, the AK does everything I like within 200 yards and I prefer a bolt rifle beyond that.

To further address the original question: You can't turn a AK into a AR and have it work very well. Assuming you have the side rail for mounting optics I'd not get the EoTech (actually, I'd never get the EoTech, but that's another post) get a Aimpoint, and mount it in one of these: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=646552

I'd also ditch the quad rail and lighten up the front end of the rifle.

Another vote for keeping the AK and adding either an Aimpoint or a magnified optic like the Vortex 1-4x24 PST. I have this mount on my converted Saiga. It sits SUPER low. I have a Nitrex by Weaver 1.5-5x32 scope with low rings and I get a superb cheek weld with this combo.
