I'm not sure how good the picture is, but is the little pin that holds the bolt carrier to the piston rod supposed to be completely flush or is it normal that one side is sticking out?

Not normal at all.

Is it flush with the other side, or is it indented?

Either way, it's unprofessional.

The question is: does your gun work?

You'll want to file that down near even with the surface of the bolt carrier, no matter what answer you find.

I can't just file it. It appears as though the pin has actually moved left. In other words, the side where it isn't sticking out, the pin has actually receded into the middle, which is why that other side is sticking out. What do I do. This is a Century Yugo M70 I bought from aimsurplus like 2 weeks ago. This happened today, only the 2nd range trip.

I don't think I can just hammer it because the pin on the indented side isn't correctly aligned with the whole.

It's not really a pin (or shouldn't be), it's a rivet. The hole where it passes through the bolt carrier should be counterbored out on both sides to give the rivet space to expand into. I would try tapping the pin back to center, and then pound both sides to expand that pin until it's firmly swollen in place. It the pin is too short to be swelled like a rivet, then tap it all the way out, buy a gas piston rivet from someone like ak-builder.com, and install that.

Yup. If possible, recenter it, put it on something flat and hard, and peen it in place. Then grind it flush.

Quick, easy fix. Probably missed a step in-factory, or 'press' fit into an overlarge hole, or was a heat-fit with insufficient heat.

Does Century have some kind of warranty on it? I could call them and let them deal with it? I shouldnt have to do all that its a brand new gun.

Is this a good opportunity to replace the bolt carrier with an American made one to move towards 922r?

The rifle should already be 922(r) compliant (has to be in order to be in standard-looking AK configuration rather than looking like a straight-stocked Saiga).

Definitely give Century a call. I've heard that people have had good experience with their customer service, with regard to getting problems fixed. But that pin should NEVER walk out on its own.

It should already be in compliance if you just bought it...as long as its in original form from importation. If you plan to change things thats a lil different. The piston would be an easy change at this point that for sure...

I know it is compliant, but I am pretty sure it requires the use of a US mag. I want to move towards being able to use foreign mags.

Well that depends on model.

Most CAI imports use the FCG, gas piston, pistol grip, and/or brake to be compliant. Most CAI build use the receiver in place of the PG. You'll just have to look in those areas and see. Note: my original WASR came with mags w/ US parts even though the rifle itself had enough to be compliant.

ETA: yes this is a good chance to replace the gas piston with a US part if it isn't already and you need it.

How do you think the rivet got that way?
Use. Noticed it last night when it was field stripped for cleaning after the range yesterday afternoon. Only the second range day and has a total of about 300 rounds through it.

No.

A factory gas piston rivet will never look like that, especially a Yugo M70 piston. The military quality control is few hundred times better than Century.

Your 'problem piston rivet' is sure sign of a Century monkey at work at beer o'clock Friday afternoon.

I was pointing out to Kurt D that the piston rivet had gotten that way because it has a US piston in it already, and Century's workmaship sucks.
