Hello all,

I recently bought a Waffen Werks AK74 receiver and Bulgarian kit from ClassicFirearms:

http://www.classicfirearms.com/ak-74-receiver-1

The problem is that when I got the receiver there was no kind of finish and the spots where the rails were welded in have rust all the way around them. There is also rust where the cross member bolt was welded in. The metal, having no finish, doesn't look good either. The question is, is this normal with new receivers? I have no doubt it would function, but if I just got a bad egg, I'd like to exchange it. Thanks for you input.

Figure out what kind of finish you're going to use, and then prep the receiver to use that. It's normal for bare steel to rust on the spot welds, the heat burned off any residual oil and the rust starts there. You're in MO, you should know, if anybody, about humidity and rust....

So it's normal for receivers to come in this condition? I know the rust from welding on metal, but I didn't know if receivers in this unfinished condition were to be expected.

They aren't going to come pre parkerized if that's what you mean.

Almost all receivers that need to be built are gonna come bare untreated metal.. So if they have been sitting around for a while they will have rust on them

I have bought several Nodal Spud receivers and they never came with any rust. They come coated with oil to prevent that. Sounds like someone skipped a simple preventive measure. It will have to be sandblasted to properly remove the rust.

Prepped the reciever, cleaned and finished and then did the weld later.
By not going back and cleaning the area welded that what you ended up with. Not a big deal if you choose to do a cerrakote or paint it.
I would be a bit disappointed if it came to me that way, just doesn't show good QC.

I think I'm gonna send it back for a replacement and if it's replacement is in the same condition I will ask for a refund and go with a Nodak. I had heard good things about Waffen Werks AKs so I figured this would be good. It's replacement may still be. I'll let you all know.

post some pics. oxidation is accelerated under the heat of welding but often it isnt iron oxide, more like a color case hardening. You can always sand out surface rust or bead blast it prior to paint.
