ak reciever 'blanks'

ok, im not the biggest fan of AKs, but then again ive never owned one or shot a 74. i see a lot blanks with all the holes in them that only need bending and ive heard a lot of stories of people who get them and bend them wrong and ruin them. ive also heard that building your own AK from one of these is NOT illegal and is actually perfectly ok, even here in the sunny state of california. well, i have a bunch of rounds of 5.45 ammo that i cant seem to get rid of... so what better way to get rid of it, right?

today while perusing around gunbroker i found recievers that have been bent but not drilled. they claim all you need to do is drill it, dremil it and heat-treat it. anyone know anything about these or has anyone made their own??

also, [like i stated above] i live in san diego and i know california is pretty anal about AKs ans ARs, yet lately ive seen more than a couple AKs which have a 22LR kit installed on them and a few ARs which have some kind of similar mods... is california letting up a little? or are people just finding more and more ways around the laws?


is it worth builing an ak74? i like that the ammo is super cheap and i like that the parts and parts kits are redily avalible.


*****i know that many of you own AKs so i dont think its gonna help with everyone chiming in together about how much they love their AKs or how much they hate their AKs. sorry to be brutally honest about it, but i knpow that these kind of topics can very quickly stray. im serious and i would like to know more if you can help
 
yes thats what im told. i also looked at the law once in california to see if my SKS would be legal here if i changed the mag to a detatchable. the law specificly states "any centerfire rifle..." and doesnt say anything about rim fire.

my other question though is has anyone tried any of these? what are your thoughts on them? do you think theyre worth it? i worked in a sheet metal shop for a while and i know how tricky it can be to get the bends right in metal, even if you do know what youre doing. the last one i saw on gunbroker was pre-bent though so all you had to do was drill the wholes, dremil out a couple spots and then harden it. where i live theres plenty of metal shops and im sure i can talk one of them into hardining it for me. the rest i can do myself
 
I too have been interested in building an ak from the blanks from coldwarshooters, they do make special kits for the magazines specifically for california and other communist states. But I do not know where to get the rest of the parts.

I looked into this once, it seemed MUCH harder than it sounds when you really look at what you have to do, but I have no real experience.
 
Try looking at the AK forum on AR15.com. They have complete picture and narrative instructions for building from a flat.

AK Builder is the site I have seen the guys from Oregon use for a bending jig, source of flats, and even a special tip for a spot welder to attach the rails.

Overall it would be too expensive to buy the tools (jig, welder, tips, riveting, etc.) to build one receiver. What makes it practical is if you plan to build several for yourself, or you pool resources with a local group and have an AK build party, such as the guys in Oregon have done every few months.

The jig is about $220, the spot welder is about $150, rivet tool is $250, barrel press kit is $95. So if you can get people together to build 6-10 AK flats then it probably starts to be worthwhile. Pretty cool idea!
 
I thought about doing this myself, but it didn't seem to make much sense. Sure, you can build receivers for about $12 each, but you also have to get around $400 worth of jigs, presses and spot welders to do it and then you have receivers that you can't easily sell legally. For about $50 more you can buy a NDS receiver and have a rifle that you can sell later if you choose to or you can just buy a Saiga and convert that.

i only wanted one as a project. it wouldnt ever be anything i would sell or give away. it would be a kind of 'toy' or project gun, just to see if they are as great as everyone makes them out to be and just to tinker with and build over time. im not looking to build a hundred of them or to make any kind of practical target shooter or anything. just for fun, just to say that i have one and that i built it myself. if i had to i would destroy it myself too. ive always been a fan of the mini anyways. and ive never had a problem with my SKS either


thanks for the info and the web sites guys, but i still didnt really find what i was looking for. i was more interested in a blank that was pre-bent that i could drill and cut myself and then build up. i did find a TON of info that did help though so thank you.



i would still like to hear from someone who has done this though
 
I suppose another thing that would make it worthwhile is if you could find a half dozen or so friends to go in on it with you. That way you could split the costs of the tools and each build a couple of rifles. You could probably even recoup 70% of the cost of the tools if you sold them online afterwards.
