I've decided I just cant survive in the world without an AK with a sidefolder. I see that Vector has a spread of them for what I'd call an attractive price.

Has anyone here ever fiddled with the east german style T/Crutch style sidefolders? Are they as good as/better than the Romanian wires? Will I be able to use a Kobra or similar russian optic with either of them, or would I have to mount something on the gas tube if I decided I absolutely had to have a red dot?

Most of the wire-type folders fold to the right. The Ace folder folds to the left, and would be my choice. The wire stocks are pretty uncomfortable.

I've examined a Vector gun so equipped. Stock seemed solid enough, but not really ideal.

Yeah I never liked the ACE stocks, too heavy too wide when folded. The idea is to cynch the rifle to the side of my hiking/bob pack. So if I get a folder I need it to fold to the right, so I dont have to remove/replace the optic everytime I fold the stock.

Sides, russian rifles+russian parts=Cool.

You want the Romanian side-folder. I have one and when extended it's as solid as a non-folder. It's also unbobtrusive when folded and the gun can be fired very comfortably with the stock folded. It's heavy steel (like, if you run out of ammo you can break some skulls with it steel). Avoid those "Galil" plastic things they sell at Tapco. They look and feel cheap. The Romanian also fits in a standard rear trunion, so if you want a fixed stock, you just buy it and swap, or vice-versa. I have a WASR-2 (ak-74) with said folding stock and a Belarusian scope mount and NcStar Red/Green dot sight. Thing fires like a dream.

I like the Romy sidefolders more than any of the others I've run across. The triangle folders are nice, but I'd have to hack off the tangs to get it fixed. I like having the option to install a fixed stock if I want to.

I think I screwed up my sidefolder awhile back because now it won't lock into the closed position. Lockup extended is very tight though.

Can't bring myself to get the ACE for the same reason I won't go with a triangle folder. I'd have to cut the dang tang to get the ACE model I'd prefer.
