A novel post........

Yep, ths one has been flogged to death. I used to own AK's, but I sold them to do more AR builds. I don't have any reliability issues and the AR's fit me. AK's do have the advantage of lower inital cost and they are a lot of fun. Another plus is they look mean. I try to pride myself as being objective, I've chosen the AR platform..........Essex

AK or AR?

Get whatever you please. If you like this one, get it. If you like that one, get it. This is America. You can own a gun. Just do it!

I would base my decision on how easy ammo is to get. Each gun has a million pieces of add-on junk to weigh it down. Right now, it seems ammo for anything is hard to get...

I own both.

I think for myriad different reasons that the AR is far superior to the AK for SHTF duty.

I am always amazed that someone who has tried both would go for the AK over the AR.

If your wife is only going to let you have one, but will let (tee hee) you pay for a top-tier AR, take the money and buy a FAL instead. As reliable as an Ak, almost as accurate as a civilian AR, just as accurate as an M16, and fires a round that puts both to shame.

Get a 16" para-FAL witht he folding stock, it's only about 1.5" longer than an AK, get a few magazines (hell, get a lot of magazines while they're still cheap), and a couple hundred rounds of Hornady TAP ammo -- great for defending the home.

Then, you won't have to wonder if you should have bought the other rifle.

If you can hunt with rifles in your state, the .308 is better thant he .223 or 7.62x39, and if you have a 5 round restriction on semi autos, there's 5 round mags available. It's very much an all-around rifle.

They'll both work. Try both and get the one you like better.

I like the AR better than the AK. I like the FAL better than both.

They both serve well. I recently took a training class that combined the AK47 and the shotgun.

The class was mainly set up using the AK47 and the shotgun in the CQB application. We did shoot the AK47 on the range at 100 yards on steel plates, but I found the AK47 to be much more effective in the realm of the CQB. I shared my observations about the AK47 in the previously linked thread. The class was unique in that I have never seen any classes in this area dedicated to the AK47 and CQB. I came away from the class with a newfound respect for the AK47.
