Could you explain the difference between single/double stack? isnt single stack not usable with drum mag?

If you could be nice to post a picture of single/double stack.

"Single stack" mags are proprietary in design, and vary between manufacturers (they're only extant to comply with US import regulations).

"Double stack" mags are the long-issued type, and are standardized around the world (but not the .223 or other non-communist-military calibers).

The drum mags have double stack feed towers, and can be used in any Kalashnikov with a standard mag well.

What kind of AK do you have? There aren't very many models with single stack mag wells.

Basically try and finger the rifle. The single stack is thin, single stack, the double stack is about the width of the bottom of the receiver.

How many rounds will your magazine(s) hold? If it only uses 5- and 10-round mags that hold the cartridges all in a single column, it's a single stack gun. If it will use 30-round mags in which the cartridges form two staggered columns, it's a double-stack gun.

the easiest way to tell is to look for dimples on either side of an AKM's magwell, single stack rifles wont have them and will have a narrower magwell. i have seen wasr's with the magwell all mangled to get a double stack to sit in, mostly at pawn shops. these can be trouble...i wouldnt mess with a single stack at all.

Double stack WASR's do indeed have their magwells widened after importation, but the importer, Century, does a better job of it in recent years than when they were first sold. The magwell is certainly one thing to check when buying a WASR, but isn't likely to be the mess they once were. WASR's sold as "10/63" are not nearly as likely to have magwell and cant issues.

Is it?

There hasn't been a Saiga made with a single stack magazine (and until very recently, all Saigas were slabsided [no dimples]).

Hungarian FEG AK receivers have entered this country by the thousands, and they all have slimline mag wells and dimples . .

It's not the "easiest way", by far.

can a standard ak mag be used in a saiga without installing a feed ramp? i believe the mag catch needs to be modified as well.. and those feg receivers are not complete rifles. every rifle i have seen for sale with a double stack magwell accepting drums and ak mags has dimples.

If Ivan wasn't looking on the rifle line, and Alexei was daydreaming on the magazine line, and you happen to get both of their specimens, sure.

You'll have better odds in Vegas.

No milsurp mag will reliably run in an unmodified Saiga. Some US made mags are designed for the unmodified Saiga.

. . then you've not been looking very well :)

im aware of saiga conversions and what is involved, however i wouldnt say that i see converted saigas for sale in gun shops..at least not around here, anyway. in fact i mainly just see .410, .223, 7.62x39 in factory config with that goofy, long trigger setup :)
