AK47 Muzzle brakes

Im looking at muzzle brakes for the AK and wondering if anyone has advice on what to get as a replacment to the slant brake? I want something to reduce recoil obviously, not just a flash supressor.

I got the 74 style from AIM surplus and have been very happy with it.

The AK74 brake works. I have one on my Arsenal rifle and that stamped AK has less recoil than my heavier chicom SKS. Less muzzle flip too.

You want the real AK74 brake that is made for 7.62 rounds. The opening at the front is right at 10mm, not 8mm like the 5.45-5.56 brakes. You also want the brake to have the expansion chamber, vents, and asymmetric holes. There are a lot of AK74 shaped braked that aren't nearly as effective. BSW

I concur with BSW on "get a real AK74 brake".

The $10 AIM knockoffs don't actually "work" all that well (sort of like taking your go-cart out on the street - it's got 4 wheels and a motor, but it's not a real car).

Hanging a 1/4lb of metal with some holes drilled in it off the muzzle may help some with recoil and climb but a AK74 brake will work better. BSW

Unless your AK is full auto I suggest that you get a quality flash suppressor and pull the butt stock tightly into your shoulder when you fire.

Sure, the AKMs and AK-74 (especially) don't have a lot of felt recoil. But the '74 style brake does a surprisingly good job of reducing even that. Shooting with and without will show you a noticable difference -- especially if you're attempting to place rapid, aimed shots, like in a 3-gun match.

The 5.56 NATO doesn't have much "recoil", either, but a great many of the guys running AR-15s hard use a compensator as well.

Can you handle the recoil without one? Sure. Will you be faster with one? Yup.

I missed that part. Brakes typically increase flash, not reduce it. Effective flash suppressors typically don't work very well as brakes either.

Brakes use the muzzle gas to do work, which pretty much necessitates fast, concentrated gas flow, sometimes using the muzzle shock to increase the effect.

Flash suppressors break up the muzzle shock and cool it by mixing with air. It's hard to use cool, diluted gas to do as much work. BSW

Don't think I ever said there was alot of recoil but everygun has some. Does your ak have no recoil? Do you have a special magic ak? Where can I buy one!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!111111 j/k
