If Al-Queda had nukes for the past 3 years and didn't use them that would indicate some government is restraining them, i.e., controlling them. Saudi Arabia?

Or more likely, they don't have any.

Report: Al-Qaida has obtained tactical nuclear explosives

By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

Al-Qaida have possessed tactical nuclear weapons for about six years, the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper reported Sunday.

The Arabic daily reported that sources close to Al-Qaida said Osama bin Laden's group bought the nuclear weapons from Ukrainian scientists who were visiting Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 1998.

The report has not been confirmed.

However, the sources said Al-Qaida doesn't intend to use the weapons against American forces in Muslim countries, "due to the serious damage" it could cause. But that decision is subject to change, the sources said, if Al-Qaida "is dealt a serious blow that won't leave it any room to maneuver."

The possibility of detonating the nuclear devices on American soil was also raised in the report, although no details were given.

The sources were quoted as saying that Al-Qaida actvists have hidden the weapons - each of which is about the size of a suitcase - in "a safe place."

Kandahar was the stronghold of the Taliban, which kept Afghanistan under tight religious restrictions until the United States attacked it in retaliation for the September 2001 attacks.

In the years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, serious concern arose in the West over the possibility that nuclear technology and weapons could spread to other groups, in part due to the difficult economic situation in the former communist lands. Several reports of the nuclear arsenal in the former Soviet Union in the 1990s indicated that a few dozen nuclear explosive devices had disappeared. One of the theories was that the devices disappeared in Ukraine, which claims that it handed over all its nuclear weapons to Russia.

For what it's worth, I believe it's more likely than not that some of the Soviet "suitcase nukes" have not been accounted for, though I've never heard a definitive answer (nor would I necessarily believe such an answer). File it under the "could be true" heading, make some reasonable preparations, and get on with your life.

I doubt if the scientist would sell them. Corrupt officers are more likely and years ago I before Al Qaeda raised its ugly head we heard rumors of some of them being unaccounted for. Still, if Al Qaeda had them, they would have used them earlier.

If they have nukes why use them? As long as they can draw from a pool of complete whack jobs, and use our own equipment against us why use theirs? If we ever manage to stop all avenues available to them and their suicide squads then we need to look for the mushroom.

    Yeah, sure, Al-Qaida has nukes...

and I've got one in my garage, too.

Let me guess, this would be an example of another American intelligence community failure?

If they're so willing to sacrifice themselves and scores of innocents in the name of Allah, then a little fission device ain't gonna be a moral objection to slow them down, they'd waste no time at all employing one. And some of us will be waiting for that attempt. ;)

Besides, why would they be looking at a dirty bomb instead of using a real one?

If they had one, they'd have used it.

Maybe it's an old one and it's too big to move, one of the old 15,000 pounders.

I believe it was Gallager that opined once:

"You see countries trying to build nuclear bombs, that don't have an air force! What are they going to do, send it UPS?"

people could make a dirty bomb easily if they want. minus the explosives you can buy lightly radioactive materials and package them with other house hold poisons. then again someone could always modify a microwave and cook theyre neighbor through the walls.

    microwave energy weapon anyone?
electronic harassment DO NOT DO THIS AT HOME!

also radon is known to leak from the ground it is a radioactive gas and can cause cancer. black lights use radioactive material. alot of things around that can have a second unhealthy use.

dont need an airforce to deliver a nuke. alot of things are smuggled via cargo containers on large tankers ships. check out the movie:Sum of all fears with ben afleck and morgon freeman. HBO series The Wire season 2 is good for seeing cargo containers disapear off docks.

How much money do we spend when some source claims that an attack is pending? If they had a nuke, it doesn't mean that it is still functional after all of these years. If they don't, they sure can get some mileage out of the claim. That said, it is just a matter of time before a tactical nuke is triggered on U.S. soil. Chance are 100%. Technology has come back to haunt us.

Even if they used them they would still not be taken seriously by 9/10ths of Americans.

Those imbeciles will still say that we need only to be "reasonable" ourselves, and try to find out what makes the psychotics "feel" that they have been wronged. So that we "the aggressors" can make amends for the fact that these bastards are spinning their wheels (such as they are) in the inky blackness of the 7th century.

Now if Al-Qaeda managed to block the sattelite feed for the stuporbowl, they might get somewhere.

    :scrutiny:

WorldNetDaily is hypothesizing that this is why Libya just got out of the nuke biz: they know Osama Yo Mama has himself a big boomer or three and will set it off in NYC, DC or similar...and that the US will go absolutely violently wiggy when that happens.

While I don't consider WND to be the best possible source, I have to admit it makes all too much sense.

FWIW, those familiar with Yosef Bodansky will know that he has stated that Osama Bin Laden has aquired tactical nuclear weapons.

    Reasons to use:

    1) They don't have the training and resources to maintain the devices in useable condition over time...use them or lose them.

    2) They're wackos...they don't need a reason...see #3.

    3) "Allah delivered these weapons into our hands for the purpose of smiting the Great Satan. Not using them is an offense against the generosity of Allah!"

Personally, I find the idea that Al Qaida has possessed nuclear devices for six years without at least attempting to use them to be a low probability.

People cannot fathom why, if Al Quaeda has tactical nukes, they haven't used them yet.

An even greater mystery is how Osama has managed to escape capture since the onset of the Afghanistan conflict. Anyone recall the stories of those mystery flights exiting Afghanistan, at the very beginning of the conflict?

One hypothesis explains both enigmas: Osama has secretly exchanged his own freedom for not attacking western targets with nuclear devices.

    Invitation to refute.

On one hand, for a while there former Soviet nuclear weapons were less secure than my recepie for beef stew. And we have recently discovered that Pakistan has sold its nuclear weapon materials and technology to anybody who had the cash.

On the other hand, that article is just plain stupid. It is just some schmuck talking out of their fourth point of contact.

The bottom line is, we'll know for sure when Al-Qaeda has a nuke when (a) we capture it, or (b) they set it off.

That assumes that Osama can be trusted to not do what he has devoted his life to do - a rather silly proposition.

His escape more likely occurred during the Tora Bora bombing: Al Qaida were trapped, getting pounded, and called for a surrender/ceasefire...then said "nah, just kidding" a half-hour later. Most likely Osama slipped out during that lull.

If they do have them, I'd say they have decided not to use them as a matter of strategic policy. They totally underestimated what our reaction to the attacks of September 11th would be. The sledgehammer approach caught them off guard. I think the current "level of wrath" on the part of the USA is about as much as they can handle. They have likely concluded that an attack of this magnitude would result in several giant smoking craters somewhere in the middle east. Therefore I concur that this will be a last resort tactic on their part. Anyone who studies Biblical prophecy should already be on the lookout for Damascus to be reduced to a smoking hole. Whether this could be related to that future event is anyone's guess.
