So here's a good one I couldn't get an answer to at packing.org.

My six month's residency in Jefferson Co, Alabama are up and I can get my CCW. BUT, the sheriffs office requires 3 people to sign attesting to your charachter. No problem, BUT "no long distance contact info and no relatives" are allowed
.
Well, the only people I know here well enough to ask them to vouch for me are my wife's family, and folks I've known in Maryland in my 35 years there are no good.

Now I guess, I will just wait till I know 3 local non-relatives to sign for me, but the occurs that when I get my Florida non-resident it is recognized by Alabama.

But, if I were Alabama LEO (and this may be my reference of living in "guns are for military and LEO" minded Maryland for so long) I would want to see an Alabama resident with his state's permit, not a Florida one.

A bit of a bummer cause one of my main joys at the move were being allowed to get a CCW. I knew about the 3 charachter references, and figured they couldn't be relatives, but never figured on the "no long distance contact phone number" part! :( I figured I would just have 3 of my Maryland friends vouch for me. Oh well!

Anyone have a similar tale of woe?

greyhound,

I recently attended an Alabama gun law class in Montgomery, AL. During the class I asked the lawyer/instructor about the issue of an Alabama resident using a reciprocal states carry permit. The short answer is no you can not.

Longer answer is AL law specifically addresses this issue and does not allow for AL residents to carry here with another states permit no matter reciprocity. This was unfortunate as the Florida permits are not restricted here and the county permits most often have additional restrictions. AL law allows for "may issue" restricted or non-restricted permits.

Find some people that can sign for you at the range or somewhere and get it done. I also recommend the FL permit as it is a great one to have. Check out www.optionsgroup.org as these guys set up the law class and have good instruction in other areas. I've been to the high dollar schools too and these guys are a very good option.

Good luck.

They would be correct. If you're an Alabama resident, you must acquire a Alabama Pistol License.

§ 13A-11-85. Reciprocity for licenses
issued in other states.
(a) A person licensed to carry a handgun in any
state whose laws recognize and give effect in that
state to a license issued under the laws of the State
of Alabama shall be authorized to carry a handgun
in this state. This section shall apply to a
licenseholder from another state only while the
licenseholder is not a resident of this state.
A
licenseholder from another state shall carry the
handgun in compliance with the laws of this state.
(b) The Attorney General shall periodically publish
a list of states which meet the requirements of
subsection (a).

Try the local gun clubs.

Thanks for the help, folks.

Dan , I've been meaning to get by there for another visit for a while now. I think I feel a 1911 calling my name!

I'll be out of town this weekend, but I should be available for a signature on Mothers Day weekend, as well.
