Alabama: Senate Passes Bill to Allow Handguns in Cars Without Permits

Car carry without a permit passed the Senate in Alabama 27-7 on Tuesday, now it heads to the house. Last year, they tried but it failed in the House according to the article. Perhaps this second time around might do it?

In some states, permit less loaded car carry is allowed. However the concealed carry permit is required for loaded car carry in Alabama, according to the article. Otherwise you may only car carry unloaded and it must be out of reach.

If you live in Alabama contact your Representatives and tell them to pass it this bill.

"Republican Sen. Gerald Allen, the bill’s sponsor, says a person’s car is an “extension of your home” and gun owners shouldn’t have to obtain permits to carry their gun in their property."
.

Call your sheriffs !!

From the article:

“If I was policing today, I would not check a car, abandoned car on the side of the road or would I pull one over if this bill passes without having my weapon in my hand,” said Bobby Timmons, executive director of the Alabama Sheriff’s Association.

Timmons says out of 67 Alabama counties, only three sheriffs support Allen’s Senate Bill 14.

Once again the Alabama Sheriffs Association is trying to stop gun rights in this state, and Bobby Timmons is apparently..... Insert non-high road comment here.

But the important part is the "only 3 out of 67 sheriffs support this bill," IF that's true this likely go down the drain so call your sheriffs and get on them!

The problem is the sheriffs make to much money for their slush funds off permits. All the money they collect from permits except one dollar go into their pistol permit fund. They can use this money pretty much as they see fit.

Maybe in other counties it is different, but in Jefferson County my permit costs $7.50/year so not sure the money aspect is really all that great an influence. Sure there is revenue but doubt it covers much more than the salary of the employee processing the paperwork.

In my county of Blount, it is $20 annually. That amounts to a nice sum of money considering that a very large number of our population is permitted. As it is often said....follow the money.

Addendum: The "ban" on carrying handguns in car w/o a permit was put in place in the wake of the Montgomery Bus Boycott! The amazing thing is that such a law -for the most part- still stands some 60 years later.

From reports I have seen just over 10% of residents in Jefferson County have permits. That's app 66,000 people at $6.50 a year that they keep. So we are talking around $430,000 a year. Not exactly pocket change and most counties charge a lot more.

Remarkable that his neighboring state of Florida has had permit-less car carry since cars existed (about 1886),with no noticeable problems and with 4 times Alabama's population.

This Sheriff sounds like an arrogant,un- knowledgeable tyrant who wants to sound like John Wayne.
