Alaskan Hunters Advice

Out west of Lilamna, accross Cook inlet from Homer. Last couple trips I took were fishing only. Stayed just outside Soldotna, fished Kaselhoff, Kenai rivers, Halibut out of Homer and float plane trips to boonies. Actually fished with the bears (us in a boat), bears on the rocks.

I think you would be shocked to to see the area around Iliamna now. The exploration for the pebble mine [gold and copper] has completely changed the character of the land. What used to be the end of the earth now has test holes, company camps and helicopters everywhere. The Mulchatna caribou herd that I used to hunt in the 90's is way down[surprise] and this is just the exploration phase-If the mine itself goes through it would be a disaster.
I wish more people in the lower 48 where aware of what is happening there on public property-YOUR property-for the profits of a Canadian company[northern dynasty]
Google pebble mine and see what you think.

I was on the Kenai the summer of 2007, but it's been over 4 years since I've been near Lilamna. Sorry to hear this. The reason I go to AK is the wilderness.

Hey guys, I just want to point out that the guy said he was going fishing, not hunting. So that rifle seems like a big waste. They are pretty darn akward to haul around.

On the other side, that Maverick shotgun is nice and handy sized, plus in the fall it is spruce grouse season. so if he gets a mind to he can by a $30 license and bag some grouse or snowshoe hare with it for fun.

RE: Pebble Mine

I have mixed feelings on these kinds of things. I hate the idea of forever damaging areas, but at the same time we do need to harvest some natural resources and
Alaska has a lot of them.

Bad thing about Pebble is the destruction of ancient spawning grounds, and I believe they are planning on ruining a pretty large watershed.

I say no to Pebble Mine.

I think I said my last two trips were fishing only, which, BTW, I did not carry a rifle, but on other trips hunting, I obviously did.
