Scored 900 LR primers made by ALCAN. Did an internet search about them but didn't find much detail. Does anyone have personal experience using them and do you think they can be used interchangeably with Winchester or Federal or CCi? Or does anyone think you have to start with a lower load and work up? Anything else to take into consideration? Thanks.

Some info in this thread may help........

Thanks everyone. Based on the thread Howa shared; I have a few loads close to max, so it seems to smart to reduce .5 if they actually do run a tad hotter.

I have always recommended (and done) any time there is a component change to do a new load work up. Never used any "formula". But I like reloading, all aspects of reloading so doing another work up is just more fun and information for me and no time sitting at my bench is "wasted". Worked for over 40+ years...

So changing bullets, primers and powders is a component change. in your opinion, is a different lot of powder a component change?

If a powder has a history of varying from lot to lot, Yes. I back off and do a small test to see if my load needs to be adjusted. At a min if a powder is know to be consistent I still run a few over the crony to confirm I'm getting the velocity I should be getting.

For general plinking in handgun, no unless I noticed something odd. For BE shooting yes, I check.

I have read, in a couple places, that powder manufacturers try keep lot to lot powder variation to less than 4%. Personally I don't consider that worthy of another complete work up. But I reload for several different guns of the same caliber so my loads are rarely near max... (only max loading was with my 44 Magnums, 5 of them, when I had a raging case of "Magnumitis").
