Hello the highroad once again we come to you for advice. This post is for Second Amendment supporters who own operate and hunt with a Remington 7 mm magnum.

So my Sobrity birthday coming on October 27, 2015. I will have been sober for seven years on this day. my local sheriff asked so what you gonna get for yourself. I looked at Sheriff and calmly replied am buying a 7 mag. The rifle will be used as a hunting rifle the budget for the rifle alone not including the optics is ballpark at around $1000. So what are your thoughts highroad what brand of rifle should I start looking at I own Winchesters.

I also own a Remington 700 in which I like the action as well I'm sort of any towards Winchester but what are your thoughts ? Tikka ? savage?

off the path, but a browning x-bolt in 7 mag is a phenom of a rifle.

Congrats on your bronze. Coin would make a great stock insert, if installed by a good smith in any wood stock.

Weatherby Vanguard S2 would be in your price range, even with the wood Sport or Deluxe stock. In synthetic, their Range Certified model with the Bell & Carson stock would also fit the bill. With it's match grade 2-stage trigger, all are guaranteed to shoot sub-MOA right out of the box, and the RC comes with a test target signed by Ed Weatherby.

I've got 3 of the S2s, and all easily outshot that guarantee.

My wife has a brother-in-law that needs to talk to you. I wish he could say he quit drinking seven years ago. Getting off the beer he would loose 30 pounds and be a hell of a lot happier. You have saved enough money in the past 7 years to buy several rifles. You can't go wrong with a Winchester Model 70. There is a lot of talk about other brands on the forums but if you are a Chevy guy like I am, buy a Chevy. The Model 70 three position safety is the best, the magazine cover release works great and the accuracy is as good as it gets. Good luck on your choice.

Covelo,

Do you favor wood and blue or ss and syn rifle and stock wise?

I have hunted with my handloads since 1953 and got stuck with a rem 722 then. The rifle lacked pride in ownership, a good 3 position safety, CRF and many other features that I demand today.

As a minimum select a M70 (mauser) design.

So logically, I should get 2 7mms; It'll be 15 years at the end of July for me.:)

I've fired a stock 700 ADL in 7mm Rem. Mag, and I wouldn't advise even my worst enemy to do so. The recoil was worse than any other caliber rifle I've shot- this includes .300 Win. Mag, .300 H&H Mag., .338 Win. Mag., and .416 Remington Mag.!

A lot of the problem was stock design. It was in a standard Remington ADL factory stock.

The rifles I fired above were:

Ruger M77 .300 Win. Mag., in a McMillan M40 Stock. Very managable recoil, even with 200 gr. Partition moose loads.

Sako Hunter in .300 Win. Mag. in Sako factory stock with Pachmyr Decelerator added. Also manageable, the Sako palm swell in both these stocks is a big plus!

Mauser action in .300 H&H Mag., in a Fajen 1960's Monte Carlo stock. Sighted this in for a customer; recoil was on par with the two .300 WIn. Mags.

Winchester M70 in .338 Win. Mag. this was the least pleasant of the group, but still way more comfortable than the 700 in 7mm Rem. Mag.

Ruger 77 Safari in .416 Remington Mag. Yes it had a Decelerator on it, too, but felt recoil was on par with the .338.

I'll close with a story from working at the gun shop:

A customer came in, cash in hand Jonesing for a 7mm Weatherby Mag. His hunting buddy had one and dropped his deer instantly with it every year. The customer had been hunting with a borrowed .30-30, and hadn't got a decent shot at one yet. He liked the action, and the recoil was OK, and he was a decent shot with it. I asked him a couple questions.

Q: What type of environment do you hunt in?

A: mostly woods; average shot is 75 yards.

Q: Do you plan on going out west Elk hunting?

A: No, my buddy with the 7 Mag. does, though.

Q: Why do you think a 7 Mag. is a good choice for you?

A: Because my buddy drops his deer with one shot with his every time; other guys we hunt with use .30-30s and .30-06's and we have had to track them down.

Q: Is your buddy with the 7mm Mag. a good shot?

A: Very.

Q: Have you ever shot his 7mm Mag?

A; No.

So, I did something that pissed my boss off, and won that guy as a customer for the shop for life-

Yes, we had exactly what he wanted sitting in back. A really beautiful Weatherby MkV in 7mm Weatherby Mag., and it had been sitting there for many years. But that's not what I sold him.

I sold him a Winchester 94 AE, with a Leupold 2-7 VX-II on it, and 10 boxes of Federal 150 gr. Premium Partition ammo, (Well, he left with 11, I threw one in free.), a decent case, and a good cleaning setup. I mounted and boresighted it for him while he waited, explained how to sight a scoped rifle in, (He'd been shooting iron sights on the borrwoed .30-30) and pointed him towards a good range.

He walked out with his new rifle and all the accoutrements, and $500 left that he expected to leave with us for that Weatherby 7mm and a cheap scope. (All he would have had left after the gun and a box of ammo...)

Made his day, made his wife happy, (He took her out to dinner that night on some of the savings) and got his deer that season. Dropped it with one shot, just like his buddy. He came in with pics and told me all about it. Askd for me from then on when he came in.....

After he left with his setup, the boss reamed me for not selling him that MkV. I asked him- Which would you rather have; Sold one rifle to a guy who thought that's what he wanted, and would go out and try to sight it in, and give up in disgust after developing a flinch, and never come back-not to mention badmouthing the shop to any one who'd listen-or sell him what he needed, and make him a customer for life?

He was still pissed....

Congrats to you on sobriety. Honestly, all will shoot plenty good enough and you have a generous budget. I'd just go fondle a bunch of rifles till you find when where you go "ohhh and ahhh".

Me, I don't like the recoil of the 7 Mag either, I would rather shoot my .458 Win Mag, but if that is what you want, go for it. I used to work with a fellow who had a Winchester High Wall in 7 Mag and he loved it. I sighted it in for him and man would it shoot.

Congratulations on the seven hardest ones Covelo-NdN. Enjoy your new toy, whatever you choose.

I have shot several 7mm rem mags never a problem even in light weight hunting guns, mind you this is not 20 rounds a sitting at a bench, but to sight in with 5-10 rounds and hunt with I never had a problem. I like Remington 700's they fit me well,I have hunted with them since my first bolt gun, I'm used to them. That said my uncle has a Browning a-bolt 7mm rem mag he has really been hard on, and it's held up well considering, I hunted with a 300 win mag for a long time in Rem BDL 700 was a fine hunting rifle for sure. I now use a 7mm-08 in a Sako AII it is also a fine hunting rig, don't look over the used market I really like the older Sako's.

Also more important than anything congratulations on kicking the habit.

Well, you stated that you already have a Rem 700, so perhaps you'd rather not choose another at the moment. But if you are open to one again, then this might be worth considering:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/REMINGTON-LONG-RANGE-CENTERFIRE-RIFLES/1791588.uts

I have one of those in 7mm RM and am very happy with it. With a scope mounted, it's about 10 lbs, so it's a bit heavy for a walking-around rifle. But then the weight also tames the recoil. It feels softer shooting than either my .308 or .270 WSM.

I did buy it to hunt with (horse will carry it most of the time :) ), but I found it to shoot right about 1/2 MOA at 100 yards when working up a load for it. So on a whim after seeing a poster for an informal F-Class league this spring, I started competing with it at 600 yards. You get 22 minutes to shoot 2 sighters and then 20 for score (usually takes about 15 mins to get it done). I'm a small guy, but I have no problem shooting 22 rounds that quickly with it.

I paid about $640 for mine, have done nothing to it, and it will score right up there with the guys who are shooting custom rifles costing 4-5 times as much.

Congrats on your seven years!

I'm gonna say look at the used market. I've bought Ultra Mags and Senderos with VXIII's for what you are budgeting for the rifle alone, worth taking a look. The last 7Mag I bought was a 77 Tang Safety and I gave $350 OTD.
On the 7 Mag IMO one of the best all around cartridges out there.

You are seriously set when you hit 24 years sober. 24,25,26,27 etc...:D

No advice for the rifle purchace.
However, congrats on 7 years of being clean and sober......thats awsome

My father in law hunts with a 7mm Browning. (BAR). He likes it a lot. Its not a bolt gun (like most are suggesting). But that is the extent of my 7mm experience.

I really just wanted to say, congratulations and keep up the good work.

My only currently owned 7mm rem mag is a 35 year old Rem 700.
It's certainly done everything I've asked of it.

As far as the important part of your post:
If it was using you, instead of the other way around;
My hat is off to you Sir for correcting that.

I'd just go fondle a bunch of rifles till you find when where you go "ohhh and ahhh".

One that fits you and balances right for you is the best bet.

Congrats on the 7 years. I got a Ruger scout rifle when I hit my 8 year.

Pardon me for asking, but I'm curious as to why you were talking to the Sheriff about your sobriety.

If he was anything like me, ALL the officers in 3 county's know you and are very glad to see you sober. ;)

Congrats on your sobriety, I know it can be very hard and a constant struggle. My whole family has gone through it and im currently trying to put down the beer myself. Keep it up!

It's been 35 years alcohol free for me, but I have no idea what I would do with five, 7mm rifles.:D If I did decide to look for one, I would see if CZ makes one.:)

With a good fitting rifle the 7Mag won't be a prob (don't know re:WBY, but Rem, no...).

I have 2M70's, a 270 Win and a .338 WM. both are easy shooting (relatively) and don't kick as much as my Rem 721 .30-06. You won't regret a Win M70 purchase! The 7Rem is a good choice ballistically, though I have shot a friend's I don't own one. At year 10 you can get the .338 and probably be done on the top end for life.

Having said that, do you know how to shoot well. If not get a good bolt action in a .223, .243, or a quarterbore or a 6.5x55 and learn to shoot well. Then step up in recoil. You won't regret it and neither will your wallet.

Congrats on sobriety: can I intro you to most of my family?

Greg

Congrats and keep up the good work.

Since you already own Winchesters and seem to be happy with them, I would say stick with it. If it aint broke don't fix it.

Congrats on the achievement and reward yourself with a nice rifle. Personally I've been sober for 25 years as of Jan. of this year. It does get easier but it never completely goes away. I don't wake up thinking I've gone back to it any more. I used to do that for years. I would have to think about it for a few minutes before I would remember that I had not fallen off the wagon. Strange what your mind will do to you. My subconscious almost had me convinced I was back off the wagon on several occasions. Very strane.

Don't see too many other Sonoma/Mendo/Lake county people around here! I'm from Santa Rosa. You shoot at UGC?

Model 70s are nice...I'm always more interested in the newer, different styles myself. Browning, Tikka, or CZ would be my recommendation! I've shot the Browning and the CZ and know the tikka's by reputation. All fantastic rifles. 7MM is a great choice too.
