Alliant 2400 for 180 gr jhc 44 mag

Starting recommended load (as per Lyman's) is 21.3 grains 2400 for 1100 fps.

What about 20 grains 2400 for ~1000 fps?
Probably. But you would be wise to work down just like you would work up: slowly. .2-.3gr at a time and watch for backed out primers, sooty cases and inconsistent groupings. The difference between a minimalist load and a primer-jammed cylinder is about half a tenth of a grain. And, as usual, by the time you see the signs of inadequate ignition, it’s too late. Remember: when deflagration becomes detonation defenestration often follows.
