Seems the whole Western World is hung up on this deal .... Winston Smith .... what should be do!??

Oh and yeah .. ''organized'' crime .. sure- it'll work wonders on that! (How much BS can people see before they realize they are being duped??)

But... but.. if you have nothing to hide what's the problem?

They've already started. I'm told my social security number will be required to renew my Michigan driver's license in 2005. That might be interesting.

I just can't help but wonder when I see stuff like this how a once free and great nation like the United Kingdom could sink into the cess pit of tyranny and no one even noticed.

The only difference I can see between the UK and the now defunct USSR is that the leadership of the UK hides behind a curtain of benevolence.

Oh well sheep will be sheep and they pretty much get what they deserve - sheared and turned into food.

This has come up a couple of times before. Reaction is mixed to say the least, some have responded to me with the 'I've got nothing to hide' others are a little more thoughtful.

It came up on a BBC panel show called 'Question Time' about a month ago. Some strong reactions against it from panel members. The 'Liberal Democrat Party' has published a 10 point plan as to why it won't work, ten good points too. See here.

Agricola has mentioned a scheme that failed on civil liberties grounds in the 1980's. A scheme was rejected by the Australians as a result of a very successful movement against it.

At the moment the initial phase will be voluntary. I'm thinking about volunteering and then denouncing the scheme. I suspect that Ag may be right though when he said on another thread that once the opposition decide that this is not a smokescreen tactic (Iraq war etc) by the govt then their opposition to it will really pick up.

To whomever it was that first asked that question, as well as to those who repeat it even today, are you paid to ask such dumb questions, or does stupidity come unbidden?

As to your social security number being required on your drivers license, while I have absolutely no doubt whatever that bureaucrats and assorted persons of statist leanings could always justify or rationalize such a requirement or request, please keep the following in mind.

The OPERATIONAL phrase is LEGITIMATE. What is the relationship between your social security number, and your drivers license, or anything else other than a claim for Social Security Benefits?

Sounds like somebody has a great database to use for identity theft.

I thought the Federal goverment mandated that the Social Security ID was not to be use for identity purposes?

As to your last, my Social Security Card says, and the following is a direct quote: FOR SOCIAL SECURITY PURPOSES NOT FOR IDENTIFIACTION.

Now then I suppose that the same people who cannot or will not grasp the meaning of that 7 word admonition are the self same people who are unable or unwilling to grasp the meaning of the words "..shall not be infringed", as they are used in The Second Amendment.
