Picked up some new equipment on a shopping mission today. Got some awsome Scarpa GoreTex boots and an Under Armour hood and some good gloves. Scored a diamond blade sharpener for the camp kit. Little stuff. Every year or so you gotta fill in the gaps. It was fun to shop and feel all excited for this years hunts. Just need a few more camp supplies and we're set.

Any rex on a field knife? Midway has a few affordable ones with a gut hook. I've always used a more generic blade but I want a slick piece this time around. Nothing fancy.

Bought a new hatchet a while back and the edge hasn't been made into a razor yet. I guess thats the consumers responibility. I have a couple of sharpening tools but I'd like the first edge to be really nice. Should I take it somewhere or will a stone and a half hour do it?

i hope you reach your goal. in the last two decades i have made the effort to complete my gear and keep finding things that would be great for the kit until i have a truckload. i have settled on a light bug out sachel and relegated the remainder to bug in status.

i got interested in SHTF gear in the 80s when i started listening to a survival talk show on late night short wave radio. for me, i keep imagining too many variables and keep picking up this and that with the only thing being static is the bug out bag. enough to get by for a few days, with emphasis on light weight. thats why i took out the hatchet and added a light saw making more "room" weightwise for more dried food. gotta eat yunno. i like the flat sawed ends better than the hacked ones. personal choice there. it is way more quiet too.

if you want a realy sharp edge on any cutter, sharpen just one edge. a machine file named a "flat bastard" - really, makes short work of edges with a couple swipes of a stone finishing it up. a too sharp edge will bend over giving you a super dull blade. all hand tools requiring edges have their own requirement for edge types. i could say get a bookl on it, imagining that someone somewhere has put one together. other than that, it is trial and error with paying close attention to details. people use tools a little differently so have their personal requirements.

my .02 is often not worth .02 , but, there you have it with a good luck to go with it. best way to evaluate your gear is to head for the woods for a day and night and get a real world check out. you needf to practice your fire making and culinary skills anyway.

Sounds like someone had a good shopping day. I need so much stuff it scares me. I will have to break down and head to sportsman's Warehouse soon and seel them one of my kidneys for the stuff I need.
