I was on a shopping center sidewalk waiting on my mom to get finished browsing recently, when all of a sudden a guy from the parking lot started running at me. He looked like a thug judging by the way he dressed. He just gave me a bad feeling in general. :scrutiny: Instincts I guess. In my state for concealed carry you must be 21. . The guy ended up just passing me & going into a store. I wouldn't have drew on him until he tried anything but my hand would have been a gun under my coat so I'd have had the upper hand. I'll try to draw you a picture but I've never done that before so forgive me if I make a mistake. The S's mean stores.

My question is, did I do the right thing?

You got the awareness part right, which is the most vital of all. Most people drift around in a daze, blissfully unaware of what's going on around them - for them, carrying a weapon likely wouldn't help much unless they get really lucky.

Definatly reposition yourself, move, etc. Never just stand stationary. As already mentioned, it doesn't have to be a combat roll behind a parked car or anything, just casual movement.

Who's bad mouthing the minority's? I didn't even say what nationality the guy was. All I said was that he was dressed like thug & was running towards me without reason. I could see that there were no cars coming so he couldn't have just been wanting to get out of the street. Plus he was still running all the way to the store even after he got on the sidewalk.

I second the movement part, the awareness you had down good, but you need to keep from allowing yourself to become a stationary target.

V4 - you were aware of the situation (i.e., your eyes and ears were paying attention). +1 for that.

Did you do the right thing? What could you have done differently?

You are trying to start a discussion about a non-issue IMO. A "thug" ran across the street, past you, and into a building. If he invaded your personal space, it is because you allowed it to happen. Move out of the way.

If people make you that uncomfortable I'd suggest not standing in a public place where people are commuting back and forth through out their daily activities.

What MadMercS55 said. Just step out of the way next time. You saw that the man was in a rush.

I wasn't in his way. As soon as he reached the sidewalk, I casually leaned against the wall like I was relaxing. He passed me & I let it go at that. He just surprised me that he was running like that for no reason I could see.

I'm thinking...

a simple movement lateral to his line of movement would have done one of two things.

If he continues his previous line of movement toward where you WERE then the observed convergence was merely coincidental.

If he changes his line of movement to continue to be on an intercept path with yours then you probably should start escalating your defensive posture: interrupt his OODA loop with a firm "Can I help you?", 90 degree line of movement change, use of environmental objects as barriers to his path, and prepare to use his momentum against him.

Sometimes it is the set up for an attack...sometimes it's just a guy in a hurry.
