870 Express birdgun. I m looking forward to shooting no 6 birdshots on paper at 15 yds and see how much the spread would look like. The factory installed Modified choke was about 8 inch spread at 15 yds. I hope it will be much tighter with the Full. They are suppose to be holding 70 percent spread in a 30 inch circle at 40 y-50 yds.

Shooting paper at 15 yards will not tell you what is happening at 40 yards, but my guess is the full tube will be somewhat over the 70% number. Did you get the regular "Full" tube, or the "Full - Lead or Steel" tube.

Just curious, but what do you plan to use it for. I've never found a use for my full choke tubes. I tend to use IC 90% of the time with modified used occasionally for long shots at waterfowl with steel shot. On rare occasions when dove are flying high, I may switch to modified. During Turkey season I pass right over full and go straight to one of the extra full turkey tubes.

Any game bird you center at 15 yards with 6s and a full choke will look like a little ball of hamburger with feathers sticking out of it.

Same here. My SxS is choked IC/Mod for doves and if I shot quail, I'd probably go Cyl/IC. My other guns have their modified chokes installed and I can't recall where the other chokes are at the moment, don't care. :D If I hunted turkey, I'd use a full, or probably my 10 gauge with the super full turkey choke it came with. I bought a modified choke tube for it as I hunt geese with it and the mod chokes steel Ts such that I get over 90 percent patterns at 40 yards in the mod choke. Steel requires less choke than lead.

When I was a kid, I hunted ducks with a full choke 20 gauge 870 wingmaster. A teal came racing in to me about 20 feet off the water and straight at me and I happened to catch him and set up for him. He turned about 10 yards out and I just pulled through him and fired. I got lucky and he fell dead in the water. I went to pick him up and found I'd blown his head completely off. :D That's how tight the pattern was at 10 yards. Pure luck, couldn't do that again in 100 tries. LOL

I have an old SxS I shot ducks and geese with back when I could use lead on 'em and it's choked Mod/Full. I've considered getting it threaded or sending it somewhere to have the chokes opened up to IC/Mod so I'd have something I could hunt with it now days. It is an old gun, bought new in 1971, and I have other guns I like now days, but I keep it around for the memories it has in it. :D

The full choke tube i got has the lead and steel printed on it. It was Remington brand $ 30 plus tax, aint cheap. I only intend to use this gun for occasional hunting using the modified . The modified wll be there all the time in case i have to use 00 buck for self defense of limb, family , home and property. My decision to get the full is i like the idea of having a tight pattern for target practice with cheap birdshots like No 6 . I can get those at Walmart for $5 for 25 shells. I m planning to try this by springtime at a friend's private land. They mostly shoot ARs so having a birdgun with tight choke coud be fun . We usually set up paper plates at 20 - 30 yds so that should blow them to shreds , LOL

BTW as to the full choke, will 00 buck okey to shoot as long they are lead , right ( or not advisable)? I know accuracy might not be there as buckshots are best at modified choke and slugs go with an IC

Full choke is what you want for turkeys. If I'm somewhere I have to use a shotgun for squirrels, I lets me take head shots without mangling the rest of the critter. Should work fine for deer with buckshot. Full is fine for trap, esp. handicap trap. I used a full choke all the time in the lead shot days for ducks and geese but usually go with modified now. Can't you find something more fun to shoot than paper plates?

A granulated plastic buffer mixed in with shot or buck will tighten up patterns. Factory loads come with buffer or you can load your own. Loads can be made with #2 copper plated shot that will pattern 100% @ 40 yds.

I shoot Full or Improved Modified for dove and waterfowl, depending on the gun and the quarry. You can always let them get further away, but if they ain't coming closer I want to go get them.

How far and high usually do those geese and ducks fly? 40-60 yds? What birdshot do you prefer to use?

If you are a newbie, restrict your shooting to 40 yards or less. Obviously, they can fly much higher. With steel shot, 2s for ducks or BBs for geese is a good place to start. Talk to some experienced waterfowlers in your area.
