What it looks closes to, mig-wise, is the Mig-25 Foxbat.

Tell me this doesn't look like someone said "Hey! That F-15 looks cool! Let's make one!

Actually, the MiG-25 was created in response to the SR-71 and U-2, to shoot them down. The MiG-25 can do Mach 3, and has missles capable of shooting down the SR. However, the engines have to be replaced after the Mach 3 episode, and no SR's were shot down (that we know of) because they couldnt detect the SR until it was on top of them.

The F-15 in the interceptor style ('A-C' models) was created to kill -25 Foxbats.

PErsonally, I want an A-10 in my driveway. Nothing says "Go away" like an Avenger cannon and Maverick missles.

(Wow, there is alot of thread drift!)

Foxbat was built for a different purpose.

Those darned XB-70 Valkyries we were working on worried the Soviets, and they needed a high-altitude, high-Mach interceptor. Hence, the MiG-25 Foxbat. So while the ill-fated XB-70 never went into production, the Foxbat did.

It would have been interesting to see how well the MiG-25 would have done against the Valkyrie.

Here's a Caption that might work, "If you thought the Right to Keep & Bear Ams only applyed to Hunting Rifles, You were Wrong!":D

'I forgot to apply the parking brake and it rolled down the driveway.'

"Well, Da**. This doesn't fit into the garage, either."

Attention, those of criminal intent. Can you run faster than Mach 2?

Hmmm. What clears the freeway "fast lane" best ? ? Sidewinders? Mavericks? ? AAMRams? ? or should I use the 20/30MM cannons?

Gewehr98; The F111 is still in use with the RAAF, they were supposedly grounded last year due to possible stress fractures in the airframe, but one went by below me when I was I was working on a lighthouse roof at Sydney's South Head in February, so they were still flying then. interesting to watch a big jet hugging a cliff face when they are only 50 feet above the water....
My earliest memory of an aircraft is from around 25 years ago. I was out on a lagoon in my row boat when 3 F111s in arrowhead formation came over the dunes, swept their wings back, banked 90 degrees above me and disappeared down the coast. They may be called pigs but I've always considered them to be a graceful bird.

Radagast

In theory, based on the unclassified top speed of the SR-71 (read: a lie), the MiG-25 could catch one. But as a practical matter, it was a non-starter. And the MiG-25 was overall a terrible performer... no range and self-destructing engines.

How fast was the SR-71? "Officially" the unlcassified answer is something like Mach 3.31. In reality? Who knows? The real answer is a secret, and if I ever knew I forgot. :D
