I'm debating trying some alternative front sight posts on a no-optics flattop AR, either to give me a crisper sight picture in daylight or to alternatively be faster to acquire.

Before I go dropping money on a selection to play with, I'd love to hear opinions from anyone running an iron sight only AR with an alternative front sight post...

A Google of AR 15 Globe Sights will get you to images like these variations of assorted front sights. With some you need a good complimentary rear sight. Depending on what you want to spend names like Centra come to mind.

The above is an AR10T that has been modified but similar sights can be had for an AR 15 type rifle. Personally I like the globe sights and have used the combination you see liking it quite a bit.

The rifle allows easily going to a scope or the conventional sights.

There is no shortage of sight combinations out there. Just a matter of finding what you like and are comfortable with using.

I have an A1 match front sight on my PSA 20", which I bought for $5 here: www.tech-sights.com. It is 4 MOA wide, which is much narrower and more precise than the factory one. Also since it is a round post with 5 detents, it gives you nice 1 MOA clicks instead of 1.25 like you get with a square A2 post (with rifle length sight radius anyway). I greatly prefer this post for shooting with irons.

Cool - thanks. Moving in the other direction, has anyone tried the XS round dot style front sights?

Interesting. I'm sitting less than two miles from their offices as I type this, and I know that they entertain walk-in guests; maybe I'll wander by and see how it looks in person. :)

I'm not sure your budget but about a year ago one of my friends got the diamondhead sights and I was able to shoot with them and they were awesome. Not too long after I bought my own set and they are the only sights on my AR.

Edit: I'm in Texas as well, and I hunt just about everything around here with this rifle and sight set up.
