Am I crazy for wanting 4 of the same pistol?

eh...a little bit. But I myself LOVE the M&P. My dad carries the .40 C and I shoot it all the time. I'm almost as accurate with it as the steel-framed 1911 I shot a few months back. Damn I was good with that RIA 1911

Am I crazy for wanting 4 of the same pistol?

My opinion, no. I can see the practical advantages of having more than one copy of the same pistol. You'd become completely familiar with the handling and shooting characteristics of the gun and at some point you'd probably be able to detail strip and reassemble it with your eyes closed. I still have to break out the owner's manual working on different guns after all these years.

Obviously one downside risk is that eventually S&W will phase out the M&P series - not likely anytime soon - and you'd have to deal with replacement parts and service issues.

One thing you can do to save money is get a new slide instead of two different guns for the matches. You don't need a night match gun & a day match gun. You can use the same pistol and then swap out the slides to get the one with the sights you want for the match.

S&W sells replacement slides & barrels for the M&P, so it isn't hard to do. I have a 5 inch M&P9 Pro, and I bought a complete 4.25 inch slde assembly so I could take off the long one and put the standard size in a duty holster.

Just an idea that may be cheaper than buying the same pistol several times.

Buy like the wind Maria! (sorry, I just finished watching "Paint Your Wagon") I think that owning as many guns as one can afford is just fine. They do say however (have you ever wondered who "They" are?) that variety is the spice of life. I say do what makes you content.

Buy 5!! :)

If you like them, want them and are not feeding your kids saltines and tap water daily, I say go for it!

crazy, yes
but don't consider yourself all alone
just consider yourself lucky to have found "the one for you"
me, I only own seven of "my one"... so far
but the day ain't over with yet

If you absolutely don't like other guns, then that's understandible, but I have to agree with those that say if you want the same gun for multiple roles, why get copies? You already have several copies of the .40, do you really need another one for home/vehicle defense? (The question is need, not want).

Personally, if I were to have guns for different locations, I'd rather they be tailored to the location. If I were to have multiple copies, I'd rather just move it from point A to point B. Nightstand gun goes in the safe when you walk out - why not walk out with you? It goes in your truck when you're at work, and goes with you when you're elsewhere. That's 3 roles (CC, HD, car) that are covered by one gun. Saves some money.

go for it.... least then you'll have plenty of spare mags, beyond that... unless you have your eye set on something else go for it (unless price/money isnt a problem) then why not buy 4 of them and 4 of something else too =)...personally i'd vary it up.. but thats me -->and my collection is still in infancy as i am under 10 handguns thus far

Boring maybe, but crazy no. I never buy two of the same gun because there are so many others out their that I want, mainly out of illogical desire. Having several of the same gun that you know and love is not a bad thing, it makes a lot more sense than the people that buy a gun without knowing if they like it, or buy it simply because of price even if they do not like it.

I chose to have 4 children, that is crazy.

OCD perhaps, not crazy, but then you're probably asking the wrong group of folks.

I personally never leave a gun in my vehicle overnight. Why not just bring it in? Is it that hard to remember? Plus, it will appreciate being warm and cozy in the house with all it's siblings.

3 seem logical considering they're not the same pistol (SD, daylight matches and low light matches), but the 4th in the same SD configuration as the first seems to be pointless since you can use the same gun for the house as carry/car and that way it will feel exactly the same instead of having any differences between the two.

Spend the money on another config or on more classes/ammo/accessories or whatever you like.

Your money.

You have found the gun you like and shoot best. All others with an opinion can go soak their heads.

For the reasons you described, no I don't think you are being crazy at all. I don't keep a dedicated car gun, except for keeping a rifle in my truck whenever feasible, and competition may well require even MORE versions of the same gun to fit into different events and classes. It works, use it.

You are talking to "Gun Nuts". You do know that, right? So yes, you are crazy, welcome to the crowd and get 6 or 7 of each, who cares? it's your money.

If you got money to waste then sure. Why not just move the gun from one place to another>??

Only Four?

What? I collect Glock 17s...they're like...like...you know, Krugerrands. A store of wealth.

I doubt you bought four of the same...

they simply multiply when the lights are out.

Many of mine are twozies or fourzies because I love a design so much, I want at least one functioning copy and lots of complete spare parts for it.
If they all function (and they do) all the better, and you save time reloading by simply picking up the next gun.:neener:

Remember:
There is my reality, there is your reality, then there's reality.

PS (I do not leave guns in vehicle over night unless I am in there with them)

I'm surrounded by J frame Smith and Wesson. With a K and N frame or two.
I would feel perfectly normal in your home.
Some would think that strange.
Its not unlike having numerous books and magazines you enjoy scattered about your home or vehicle. Enjoy.
