I'm just now moving into Maine from New Hampshire and I don't already have a Pistol License from New Hampshire. The way the law reads is that I'm going to have to wait 5 years before I can apply for a permit. Is this true or is there another way I can go about getting a permit?

I think you're reading the law wrong. There is no 5-year wait. I believe the only place the 5-year-residency thing is mentioned is in the statutory time limit for the issuing authority to issue or deny the permit; for resident of 5 years or more, they have 30 days; for a resident of less than 5 years, I think it's 60 days.

Permits are actually running over 90 days through the State Police (and they're warning it may be as much as 150 days).

My concern is, I have my re-apply paperwork sent in about 2 weeks ago and it expires in June.... What happens then?

I guess I dont carry from the last day of May until I get my new permit.

If you've submitted your renewal, your permit remains in force until the issuing authority acts, even if the expiration date passes while they're still processing it. No worries.

25 MRSA 2003(12):
Permit for a resident of 5 or more years to be issued or denied within 30 days; permit for a nonresident and resident of less than 5 years to be issued or denied within 60 days. The issuing authority, as defined in this chapter, shall issue or deny, and reply in writing as to the reason for any denial, within 30 days of the application date in the case of a resident of 5 or more years and within 60 days of the application date in the case of a nonresident or in the case of a resident of less than 5 years. If the issuing authority does not issue or deny a request for a permit renewal within the time limits specified in this subsection, the validity of the expired permit is extended until the issuing authority issues or denies the renewal.

What provision of the law do you think requires a 5-year wait? Do you have some arrests or convictions that would be relevant?
