I saw an old Mauser sitting on the back shelf, good price

Ended up with an Amberg 1917, GEW 98

I know next to nothing, but it was a good price even for a beat up sporter, can someone point me in a good direction or tell me a little about the rifle.

You are now the proud owner of the finest mauser ever. An imperial German from the rarest arsenal Amberg is in (bavaria) i believe. If the barrel isnt cut you could restore it. it is worth 300-500 in millitary dress. Less sportered. Lucky;).
p.s. repro stock sets can be had.

and some more
Like I said, it's in bad shape and I think it has been cut down, if you need more pics, let me know, I may have missed something

Also, anybody know a source for a stock that won't break the bank, I would like to restore this as much as possible.

Well, looks like a bad bubba job, sorry. but the reciever looks to be already drilled for scope mounts. The eagles look to be weimar and the S/42 code is nazi. Quite odd really. The original barrel length should be 29 and a bit inches. Well collector value destroyed.:(. But she should turn into a nice sporter with a little tlc.

Me thinks the gew 98 has a large ring barrel. So any mauser stock for that type should fit. Me thinks.

Yeah, there is no import mark, and I hope that under that ugly varnish I have a unit disk, but if it was rearsenaled, I have little hope of that(would the barrel have been shortened to K98 lengths at that time?) The barrel has worn rifling with not to deep pitting, it still looks like a barrel and not a sewer pipe, the crown is trashed though.

I think I'll try to find a nice stock, I'm thinking something like a Mannlicher, or just reworking the current one to bubba Pr'fctnn.
