I was looking at a CAI AMD-65. But after reading the shotgun article. It lists the folded length at 25.5", which is under the legal limit in michigan of 26".

Anyone know if that length is right? Anyone own one in MI?

Thanks

I asked the same question on the MI Gun Owners forum about 2 different kinds of AMD65 rifles and falsely concluded that one is illegal and one is legal.

The first one had the front sight post right next to the gas block. Forward of the front sight was around 2 inches of barrel length and a pinned flash suppressor. With the stock folded, it was 25.50 inches, thus, illegal in the sate of MI.

The second AMD65 I ran across on the net had the front sight away from the gas block and right behind the flash suppressor. I had thought that the barrel length was increases but that turned out to be false. Only the front sight was moved forward and that gave the appearance that the barrel was longer, which wasn't. So both are illegal.....unless someone can prove my wrong(PLEASE prove me wrong :D I want an AMD65)

You know something? Back in April I went to the Gibraltar gun show and guess what I saw? An AMD65 with the folding stock! Looks exactly like all the other ones and would be illegal in MI, but there is was for sale. And the guy selling it had to have been a FFL dealer because his tables were massive and he was selling all kinds of long guns and handguns brand new in boxes and all that. I don't know how he managed to get that AMD65.

Just to clarify, any rifle that can be folder up under 26" in length AND fired is illegal in MI, right?

Does the same apply for shotguns?

As I understand it anything less than 30" is a pistol in MI. My Kel-Tec Sub 2000 is registered as one.

1. Yeah the feds measure the rifle with the stock open whereas MI law measures the stock in its closed position and still able to be fired. The Uzi carbine has a 16 inch barrel but with a folded stock it is under 26 inches in total length and still can fire. Therefore, it's illegal. That example is even on the MI legislature site.

2. Don't know about shotguns. Someone might want to teach me about that. I only know that SBS (short barreled shotguns) are illegal in MI.

3. Yes, when a rifles stock can be retracted and can be fired in the position...AND has a length between 26 and 30 inches, it must be registered. I believe you probably might need a pistol permit to buy it too. Did you get one?

Anything under 30", and longer than 26" when folded is a pistol in MI. Shotguns however need an 18" minimum barrel. You need a green card. Also a pistol permit, or CCW to purchase. The good thing about this, is now you can legally carry a loaded trunk gun. Call Deb Smith from MSP, and she will confirm.

Hmm I logged in and sure enough the post I was going to respond to had been edited or deleted...i.e. the original phraseology that I wished to dispute was no longer there.

Anyways here is the MI law for future reference:
http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/Publications/Firearms.pdf

This is the most important part of the whole PDF in my opinion:
MCL 750.222; MSA 28.419, in pertinent part, provides:
‘(d) ‘Shotgun’ means a firearm designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder
and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire
through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for each single function of the trigger.
‘(e) ‘Short-barreled shotgun’ means a shotgun having 1 or more barrels less than 18 inches in length or a weapon
made from a shotgun, whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise, if the weapon as modified has an overall
length of less than 26 inches.
‘(f) ‘Rifle’ means a firearm designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and
designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed metallic cartridge to fire
only a single projectile through a rifled bore for each single pull of the trigger.
‘(g) ‘Short-barreled rifle’ means a rifle having 1 or more barrels less than 16 inches in length or a weapon made
from a rifle, whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise, if the weapon as modified has an overall length of
less than 26 inches.’

See the law defines short-barreled rifle and shotguns as those weapons that have been ALTERED or MODIFIED.

That is all I wanted to chime in with.

There is an AG's opinion that specifically deals with this topic. See this Guide. It is on pg. 186.

I have a Yugo M70 AK underfolder and a Mossburg 500 with a folding stock, i registrered as pistols.

Thought the AMD looked neat. May be looking for a new gun or 2 with some extra money, and thought the AMD might be on the list.

I may call CAI and see if they can give me the length folded. I am basing the 25.5 length on the shotgun news article.

I am guessing no one seems to have one. So if anyone has one in MI chime in.

Got an email from the CAI tech dept.

"My measurement with the stock folded is 25.25"; extended is 35"."

So i would take it that the AMD is illegal for Michigan then. :(

oh well.

All is not lost.

I would rather get an AMD63 because as some have mentioned, the AMD65 stock sucks.

Here, the AMD63
